hey guys, i just recently purchased a 99 civic SI, i really love the car, car is amazing once it passes 5500 rpms.

but there is one problem, my shifter is reallly stiff and is hard to move, im just wondering what the problem could be, possibly tranny flush? clutch? the clutch is okay but will need to be replaced. i could still drive the car perfectly, and once u get used to it its nice, but im just wondering why its so stiff, could it be some mod the previous owner put in?

Maybe. You don't know if someone molested the car. It's a Honda, ya know? LOL
Perhaps you're just not used to driving it? What were you driving before? If you're not used to a Honda gearbox, it's not like a Chevy or a Ford or a Mazda. One thing I would DEF do anyway is a change of transmission fluid and oil and plugs and stuff. If I didn't do something, I can't trust someone else to have done it in the past.

 

yea, the car has 75 thousand miles runs strong, but he has installed a short shifter, no i had a ef b4, this is too stiff, its suspicious. yea imma do plugs and tranny fluid. any more suggestions?

 

Other than tranny fluid? Nope. You can put an OEM shifter in there and see how it is. If the previous owner did a short shifter, it could always be like a $7 Ebay special, which doesn't properly lock into gear wearing out synchros. If you're getting a short shifter, spend the money for a nice DC Sports or Skunk2.

 

maybe the short throw shifter is causing the problem? What brand of short throw is it? Are all the bushings in the linkage okay?

 

about how long will it take for me to realize that the tranny fluid has fixed the problem after i change that?

you should notice it instantly, well kinda. just buy 2 quarts of Honda MTF or whatever fluid you like.

ONLY Honda MTF.

 

hehe . also forgot to add check out em1crew.com for all your 99-00 civic si needs.

 

and loosen the bolts to the short shifter a bit.. That's what I did and it helps with the shifting.
