Default Klunk / Clunk sound from engine bay area

I have a 2001 Honda Accord EX 4cyl ULEV.

Anyway when i drive over semi irregular road, like with cracks and little uneventies, i hear a clunk sound from the front. I cannot tell if it is coming from right side or left side. Neither can the passenger.

Anyway the sound has become progressively louder in the last 30,000 miles. Now it is pretty obvious with the stereo off.

Anyway first I thought it was the shock assembly-rubber mounts, that sit on top of shock that were worn out, making the shock clunk back and forth. So i replaced the struts and those mounts (i forgot their tech name). But it did no change, altough improved my ride just a little.

Then also if I drive over 50mph the sounds goes away, on the freeway even if the freeway is bad @ 60 mph the CLUNK sound is non-existent, it's best heard when i cruise @ 10-30 mph not pushing my gas pedal.

The engine idles smooth, and has no problems what-so-ever. (thank god).

I also tend to be lead footed accelerator.. so yeah that could have something to do w/ it.

Anyway hit me up guys what you think the cause is, i dont want to take it to the dealer here in the So-Cal area they think everybody is a millionaire including people that drives hondas....

ALL HELP IS APPRECIATED!!!

Springs or your cv joints are out of whack.

I just replaced my shocks and it did not help the sound, also it could possibly be the CV joints then.

It was the transaxle that was broken. I got it rebuilt and now the sound is gone.

Default Excuse my newbiness

You got you transaxle rebuilt? What is that and where is it located. But before the smart *** comments start coming in, is there another name for the transaxle like driveshaft, midpipe, innner/outer cv joints.

Here is another question or one to clarify. I've heard people saying they are replacing CV joints but in fact they do not. They replace their axle, which has an outer and inner CV joint. So is the Transaxle the same as an Axle?

transaxle = transmission, axles, your cv joints is on the axle inner goes into tranny outer connects to hub assembly or tire if your not familar with the assembly.

A transaxle is on Front-Wheel Drive cars, a transmission is on Rear-Wheel Drive cars.

On a RWD car, there is the engine, transmission, a long driveshaft, differential, and two half-axles connecting the differential to the wheels.

On a FWD car, there is the engine, transaxle, and two half-axles connecting the transaxle to the wheels. It is called a transaxle on a FWD system because the transmission and differential are combined into one unit, called the transaxle. (However, a lot of people still refer to the transaxle on a FWD as a transmission.) The term transaxle does not include the CV joints or half-axles (drive axles).

The half-axles (also called drive axles) on a FWD car have inner and outer CV joints. When a half-axle axle is replaced, it means that the inner CV joint, outer CV joint, and the shaft that connect them are all replaced as a single unit. The inner CV joint connects to the transaxle. The half-axle (inner joint, shaft, outer joint) is a separate unit from the transaxle, which is just the transmission and differential gears inside a case.

All that to say, a transaxle is not the same as an axle. And, replacing the half-axle does mean that the CV joints are replaced.
