Default honda prelude exhaust queston

hello,

guys i'm suppose to pick up a honda prelude bb6 within a few weeks and im so happy! this will be my first car...

i was wondering has anybody put on an es tuning oval muffler on a honda prelude before? this muffler is just a tip, so i know i would have to get a custom pipe and stuff...i was just wondering what things would i need...i'm not really good with cars...i plan to take this car to a muffler shop along with the tip...
so basically what else do i need beside a pipe from the exhaust to the header like i mean things such as test pipes and resenators and stuff? also can anybody tell me what a catback exhaust system has from the headers all the way to the muffler?
i don't want the exhaust to be loud and ricer like...i just want this exhaust because it improves the overall performance and keeps the stock look...
oh yeah es tuning on makes this tip/muffler, it doesn't have a full catback of this exhaust...

thanks!

Just tell the guys at the muffler shop you want a 2.5 in catback with that muffler. If the muffler actually has baffles it should sound pretty good, if it is the straight through design then it will be pretty loud. However, if you remove the cat and use a test pipe you will get that raspy/rattling ricey sound. A resonator will help keep the ricey sound down, but the cat really does a good job by itself and if you're just driving on the street you will never notice the difference in hp by taking off the cat. FYI lots of of states around here have a 5000 dollar fine for driving with no cat... not worth 2 or 3 hp for me. So basically, I have headers, a cat, a 2.5 in catback and a straight through "muffler" with no resonators anywhere. It's really loud, but sounds sweet.

i'm going to try to explain what everything is that has to do with your exhaust. from the engine you have the header, this collects the exhaust gas from each cylinder and gathers them into 1 pipe. the place where the header turns into 1 final pipe id called the "collector". connected to that is your catalytic converter. the function of this patr is to clean up the exhaust gasses and make them more eco-friendly. it consists of some honeycomb shaped material that the exhaust must pass through. if you have an obd2 car (car produced after 1996) then there will be a sensor that detects is the cat is working properly. a test pipe replaces the cat with straight through pipe, so the exhaust doesn't have to work its way through the materials in the cat. the sensor on obd2 cars with sense that the cat is not working if you do this. from the cat you have the cat-back exhaust. this is what most people replace when they get an aftermarket exhaust. the bigger/wider the pipe, the more top end power you will have at the expense of losing low end power. also, bigger pipe = more flow = louder. a muffler (as the name suggests) muffles exhaust noise. a resonator, which is usually located before the muffler and is located right after the cat, also helps reduce noise. a resonator also changes the tone of the exhaust. unfortunately the tone a resonator produces varies. different resonators from different manufacturers will make different tones, its as simple as that. don't think 2 resonators of the same size will have the same affect. sorry to write so much, but i hope it helps you understand. oh ya, and muffler shops will NEVER install a test pipe or remove a cat without a new one, the government would shut them down in a heart beat.

oh ok...that kinda helps me understand...so basically i guess im guna get new piping after the cat...so after the cat ...there would be piping and then the resonator and then the exhaust...i guess that is what i'd do...it will work right? also how much do you think it would cost?

thanks!

ive got a question, and sorry for stealing this thread.

but stock piping on a 5th gen is around 2" right. im about to get custom exhuast made but im still unsure whether i should get 2.25" or 2.5" piping. i dont want to lose the already low low end power that i have.
