How to tell all the different engine options for the Civic HX (96-00)?
I'm in the market for a 96-00 Civic HX. However, when I went to http://www.cars.com they list several engine options for the HX:
106-hp, 1.6-liter I-4
115-hp, 1.6-liter I-4
127-hp, 1.6-liter I-4
I want the one with the best gas mileage, which I would assume is the 106-hp engine. However, how do I know I'm getting that engine when I'm shopping for the high mileage HX's. Is there anything to ask the previous owner or a code on the VIN that might help me make sure I'm getting the HIGHEST fuel efficiency HX?
Thanks

They are all going to be so close it won't matter an rch of a difference.
They will all be between 34-40 highway miles depending on engine miles/condition and driving style.
I drive like a bat out of hell in my 00 dx hatch and I get 325 miles to the tank.

civic hx ONLY came with the d16y5
so...cars.com is wrong
y5 is 115hp
35/43mpg manual
(www.edmunds.com is far superior)

I had that suspicion too, but I'm not familiar with the HX.
I knew every other model only had the choice of whatever engine came in it.

first off any sohc civic will give you good gas mileage, but as long as the was maintained. just because the civic has 106hp, doesn't mean it'll give you good gas mileage. it's all about maintenance. this is something that you should ask the previous owner. ask for receipts, and/or some type of maintenance log.
but if you are looking for a puny motor, not to sure what engine code it will have, but you can run the VIN on carfax.com
