99 Accord EX 4-cylinder. I found somewhere on the internet that claims this car holds 17.1 gallons, but the most I've ever had to put in it was 14 gallons and that's after riding around with the gas light on for a day. Do these cars REALLY hold 17 gallons? I also got 28 miles to the gallon with my last tank, and 25 the tank before. Does this sound about right? I'm not complainin' at all. The best I ever got in the truck was 14, when I had the 2-barrel on it a few years ago.

In the owner's manual, it says that the tank is 17 gallons, and I'm pretty sure it's that big. If you drive on the light long enough, you will have to fill up more than 14. The gas light goes on at 3 gal left, so 3*25 mpg = 75 miles (using 25 mpg to be safe). You should be able to do 75+ miles on the light before you run out of gas. 25 and 28 mpg sounds about right. It all depends on the type of driving (city/hwy) and your driving style. Last tank I got 28.5.

 

Yes, the gas tank holds 17.1 gallons. The gas light is actually supposed to come on when you have about 4 gallons left. The pointer on the gas gauge will actually dip below the line and towards the bottom of the "E" before your tank runs completely dry.

When I worked at the dealership, it was rather common to need 16+ gallons to fill a new car's gas tank. (Cars are shipped from the factory with only a couple gallons of gas.)

but what i mean to say was does the gas needle really go all the way down to the bottom of the E?

cuz if it does, mad props to honda, for totally idiot-proofing the car, like with it being impossible to lock the keys in the car if theyre 1/2 way in ignition, and automatically relocking itself if u hit unlock and dont open a door, and not being able to remove key without putting it in park, umm, and stuff?

Yeah, it really does. I wouldn't try running it that low for a lot of reasons, with 1 of them being that gas gauges are not always accurate when the car gets older. You really shouldn't even let it hit the line.

 

Well its good to know that when the light comes on I can make it another day (maybe two) without havin to fill up.

And you're right about the gauges, they're far from accurate. In my truck (granted, 1980 technology FTL) it would bounce between 3/8th and past empty for days, but when it stayed at E and didn't move, you knew you were almost completely dry.

So iv noticed I'm not getting as much mpg as the rest of you what could be the cause, the panel over my gas pipes were undone too. Should I go look for something irregular, suggestions?

Engine?
Transmission?
Current MPG?

Verified there are no stored codes, just because the CEL/D4 lamps are not flashing does not mean there isn't a code stored or problem.

Is the engine in proper tune, plugs, wires, O2S, filters, oil, valves adjusted?
Is the car body stock undamaged?
Is the chassis/suspension properly aligned? Tires have the correct PSI in them?

If I drive like a madman I'll get 26MPG. Driving in crap traffic as well can drag down the MPG.
If I drive normal I'll get 30MPG.
If I drive conservatively I'll get 34MPG.

'95 AT Accord 300K miles with an Ody transmission. Fairly sure if I had the correct trans in my car it would be 30/34/38.

A few good WOT pulls can take a good 34MPG run down to the high 20s.

In my car I've noted that if I drive below 1/4 tank the MPGs take a hit too.
