Whats up everyone...
I have just aquired a 1998 accord ex 4cyl/auto off of a friend for a decent price...The problem is for the first 2 minutes or so of driving the transmission flares/slips from the first to second gear shift....After it warms up it shifts perfectly fine......Any clue what to check out on this thing to try and resolve this problem??? thanks--

 

The transmissions in 6th gen Accords have a defect in them. You can try few different things to help it last longer.

- When parking the car, step on you brakes and pull up the ebrake first, then let go of the brake so the weight of the car is on the brakes not the transmission then shift it into park.
- Get you transmission flushed or check the current fluid level.
- Install a transmission cooler.

I have been doing all of that and have a transmission cooler installed also and it helps a little bit. Also when you are sitting there and warming up the car for few mintues, shift through the gears manually so the transmisison fluid can start circulating faster.

 

How sure are you on the e-brake thing and the shifting through gears deal?

 

Its common sense really but if you dont believe that I have had the car since 2002 and I have always been doing that and its still on its originall transmission so I guess thats another answer.

What do u mean by defect??? Is this considered normal??? Meaning if I decide to sell the car, can I say "the transmission slips when cold, but dont worry thats normal " ????

 

No, its not considered normal and the 6th gen Accords arent the only vehicles affected. The second gear bearing usually fails. There was another thing but I cant remember all the exact details right now. There is an extended warranty for 00-01 models for the problem but all the other years there isnt much help.

Same thing happened to my 98 EX....started out only doing it when it was cold. Gradually got worse, now the tranny won't shift out of 2nd. I recommend you get a flush done, then install the cooler. The filter is on the inside of the tranny - that was "mistake #1" for Honda. Eventually you will have to replace the tranny if you don't get it taken care of soon.

 

Yeah, I guess I will try flushing a few times....Its really not bad at all, it just flares for a quick second the first few minutes your in the car until it starts to warm up...

New user here.

Anyway, I own a 2000 Honda Civic DX (Hatchback) and I live in Minnesota. In the winter time (now), when temps drop into the 20s and lower, I begin having transmission troubles when first attempting to drive in the morning. Here is what I have noticed:

Reverse works fine. No noticeable problems. 4th & 3rd creep at best when idling, and when I hit the gas the engine winds way up with only a little bit of forward motion. 2nd seems to work fine unless it gets really cold. When it is warmer out, I have no problems at all.

Is there some effective way to preheat the transmission (like a you would an oil pan) to help alleviate this problem? Even after letting the car get up to running temp, the transmission still hardly reacts. What is going on here?

Any help would be apprecaited!

Even thought this is the Accord side, some things still hold true, check the civic folks.....the trans fluid was last changed when and with what type of fluid- Honda trans fluid I hope......
