Default Synsei's DA LSVTEC / Restoration build...nobody still has 56K anyway

Well I've been documenting my build on G2IC, but figured I'd wait until the project started to move a little quicker before posting on HT. This is my first engine build so I'm open for opinions and suggestions. I've researched for what seems like forever and after following threads by D-Rob, Bam Bam, and Big Teggie (just to name a few), I started my build.

I'm not a baller so don't expect the progress to be as fast as some of the mega hard parkers lurking everywhere. Anyways, I sold my 1st DA and have regretted it ever since. It's my favorite Honda chassis of all time so I got another one. Well I blew the motor 2 weeks after buying it. Plan is to build a mild, reliable LSVTEC. If youre bored...follow me on my journey.

91 LS

Head- B16 out of a 99 Si (stock internals for now)

Block-B18B

Hot tanked, bored +25, honed
LS rods (reconditioned)
P30 Pistons OS+.25
Hastings piston rings
ARP rod bolts
ACL main, rod, thrust bearings/ washers
ARP head studs
MFactory magnetic drain plug
FullRace VTEC conversion kit

A clearer picture of the passenger side fender damage.

This bay is CLEAN. Sike. This is the last picture of this engine in the car.

The infamous drivers side tear thats notorious in DA's.

Damn. Enjoy the silence. Guess so.

Got miles y0?

Most powerful exhaust system evarrrr.

Picked up some coilovers. Ground Controls waiting for some action.

I stripped and resprayed the ugly chipped up valve cover with some black wrinkle paint.

The B18B mains, rods and pistons. The pistons will get tossed and I'll be shotpeening the rods.

Bearing wear. These will be replaced with some ACL bearings (clearances permitting).

ARP rod bolts. The difference between a reliable LSV and a unreliable one.

Got a good deal on the short block. I was almost tempted to slap it in and have my car running but...nope.

B16 Head out of a 99 Si

B16 Intake manifold. Soon to be replaced by an AEBS unit

Anyways, took a break from motor **** and picked up set of mud flaps. Miniscule update...blah.

Ok. Finally moved into my house and have some room to work.

First thing I did was rip out the seats and that nasty carpet. Sound deadener is staying for now.

Pics of the old DA circa 2002. I wish I had some pics without the chick, but I didn't own a camera at the time and my photographer was a womanizer.

My homegirl Kennica came through with some offers I couldnt refuse.

B16 water pump and oil pump. $50 for both.

Anyways, we pulled the engine out tonight.

Pretty smooth operation ecept for the bitch pin in the shift linkage and also the drivers side axel (ended up just cutting the boot).

Here are some pics.

My boy Richard helping out.

SiShane and Richard.

Me and my "father in law".

My boy Machine Gun reminding us that crack kills.

And it's done.

Thanks to my friends/ family for all their help.

Now comes the fun part...

Ok, I'm taking a small break but didn't want my thread to die.

My girlfriend just got me these for Valentine's Day. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and Dunks are my favorite shoe so she got me these...

Jedi Dunk

While I have the motor out, I got started on cleaning up the bay. Not doing a wire tuck by any means, just want to streamline a few things. I'll be relocating the underhood fuse box into the cabin and hiding the headlight harness. My wiper motor is out and according to Pandahatch (6SPD DA6), maybe I won't need it. We'll see. Anyways, I snapped off a couple pics.

Mmmm...Shinerbock. What's up Austin TX?

Fuse block wires pulled into the engine bay.

Well IL4 wanted to charge me $1800. expletive that. Back to plan A.

Anyways, I just bought some oversized P30 piston (+.25) just to be on the safe side.

I'm back on track.

I just got flew back into town last night after being in Florida for 2 weeks on business. My ACL rod and main bearings, and thrust washers came in while I was away.

New parts in from KTeller. Super fast shipping.

ARP Headstuds

Hastings piston rings OS +.25

Ok. Today was a pretty big day for me. My motor mounts cane in and they look ******* dope. I also went to the machine shop to pick up my block. Work done included hot tank, bore and hone (+.25), LS rods were reconditioned w/ ARP rod bolts installed, the P30's were pressed onto the rods, and my crank was polished. Here are some pics:

Block looking nice

Pistons pressed on with ARP bolts

Crank polished up

The mounts I got from Xenocron. Thanks again bro. I can't wait to install them.

The price tag for the machine work. Not too shabby.

My favorite board. RIP Chomp. I miss you.

Well, I called Full Race and they said that my VTEC conversion kit wouldnt be shipped for 2 more weeks. Blah. I'm not in a rush. Afterall, this is Synsei's slow Build.

Until next time...

Yeah. It wasnt too bad I suppose. I'm not really into tan though. I do plan on keeping certain components of it but the carpet will either be dark graphite or black.

** Edit ** Damn, I forgot to post a few pics:

I also traded Kennica one of my extra LS heads for these suckers...

These seats are in EXCELLENT condition (minus the filler dust from the body shop they were in). :cloud9:

I hate to say it, but I think I've been way luckier on this DA than on my last. Hmm..

Anyways, picked up a replacement fender for the existing demolished one. Thanks Steven. See you at the Honda Tech meet.

And some pics of my old block for ***** and giggles...maybe even tears.

And I like to give a special shout out to my best friend. The one that makes this whole project possible.

My daily driver...

Hahah...

Well I got an email from Full Race saying that my VTEC conversion kit shipped. I guess the guy I spoke to on the phone didnt know what he was talking about. Anyways, after assembling my block, cleaning up the head, and piecing it all together, I should be cooking with fish grease.

Sorry brosama. The carpet was the first thing to go. I bought the car from my friend's ex girlfriend and she had to big *** dogs that she liked to tote around in it. It reaked so I trashed it. I plan on getting some brand new black or dark graphite carpet.

Yeah, they'll be ok for now. Ultimately, I want to get some Memfab R98's. Thanks for checking!

I'm just a genuine lover of the DA chassis.

Quick question. I'm building my block and went to my local parts store for some supplies. Having never used Plastigauge before, I simply asked the guy behind the counter for some. What he brought me looked like everything I'd seen on HT so I didnt think twice about it. After putting my main caps on and torqing it down, I realized that the clearances shown on the Plastigauge package werent even the clearances I was needing. Then when I started looking around on here again, I noticed most people had green Plastigauge while mine was blue (this may explain why everything looked so tight). So my question is this: Between the different colors of Plastigauge, are the crush characteristics different? For example, is blue softer than say the green (making it crush more?). Or is all Plastigauge the same and only the reference chart on the package changes? Thanks in advance.

Today I got the crank installed in the block. I was wanting to install the pistons, but the machine shop torqued the **** out of the rod bolts and I don't own a table clamp. Anyways, heres a few pics of the festivities.

Here's a picture of the block after painting. I went with a VHT color called Flat Aluminum. Came out pretty good.

Also cleaned up the oil and water pumps

Preparing to check oil clearances

Bearings go in

Bearings installed

Main caps cleaned

Bearings installed in the main caps

The Plastigauge Mistake

Thrust bearings with assembly lube

Incorrect and correct

Clearance specs. Cross your fingers.

Main cap bolts soaking in oil

Looking good so far

Score!

Assembly lube on the bearings

Final torquing of the crank assembly

Done.
