Default Blane-Blane's Build Thread B16A restore/90 Si

I had this posted on ef-honda.com a while back and I'm starting to get things all together so I figured I would go ahead post what I've got so far on h-t. I am by no means an expert in assembling motors or anything, so this will be a great learning process for me. I'm posted this to receive feedback, fun, and to receive assistance on anything I might have issues with on putting the motor together.

Originally as you'll find out (the farther down you read), I had planned on building the 1st gen b16a that I had in my previous hatch, but a friend of mine recently hooked me up on a LS motor so I have decided to take the plunge into the world of LS/VTEC's. and without further a due.

I previously had this motor in my '89 DX hatch, which had mild hail damage on the top, had hit a couple of deers (earning it it's very own salvage title, and had over 350000 miles of service under it's belt. It's pictured below.

Motor in car-

Car in action-

The best time I got out of this motor in stock form (albeit equipped with an ebay intake, and 2.25 inch invidia exhaust) was a 14.592 at 93.62. Several other runs were made with trap speeds of a little over 95 but those were with different wheels and tires.

Nontheless, the engine is now awaiting to be built in naturally aspirated form and laid into the following chassis: a clean title, 1990 Si.

The car will be getting resprayed the OEM color this summer before the motor is installed, and will be getting some love in terms of a new passenger fender well, OEM front and rear bumpers, and perhaps a couple of other odds and ends.

The engine is now sitting in my room and is looking as such:

plans for it are as follows:
-ITR intake manifold (already have)
-ITR throttle body
-Rywire OBD0-OBD1 conversion
-CTR pistons
-Eagle rods
-Street port and polish/valve job done by DonF
-Rocket Motorsports M22x cams
-RM valve springs
-RM retainers
-TODA header or equivalent
-2.25 mandrel bent exhaust (might opt for a 2.5 if I can find a used one for a decent price)
-ARP head studs (already received)
-Skunk 2 pro series adj cam gears. (picking up tomorrow)
-Supertech Nitride Coated valves (ordered already)
-Marshall liquid filled FPG
- XYZ aluminum fuel rail (yet to be determined)
-dual core half size radiator
-Full-Race or Ice-Man traction bars to eliminate that wheel hop.

Enjoy the pics!

EDIT: duplicate pictures removed. Didn't see them initially.

and by the way, look what came in the last couple of days....

Got new parts into today and albeit they are small in size, I can sense I'm getting closer to my parts list being complete.....muahh hahahaha.

anyway, I also listed a pic of my EF9 gauge cluster that'll be going in my new car after I get ready to put the motor in. Enjoy! Post comments and critiques of other things you might like to see. I just had another thought today about going LS/VTEC, it's a possibility.

Got my used ITR throttle body, IACV, map and tps sensor.

here's a pic.

just picked up my B18A tonight from a friend for $300. The complete motor, minus the tranny and the ECU, but i already had one to run it on (not that it matters, some p28 variant will most likely be used).

It also came with some nice slugs in it. They're SRP forged pistons that Im told are supposed to yield 10.2:1 in the LS motor. Im just wondering what the compression ratio will increase too when the b16a head goes on.

will have pics tomorrow after I drop some stuff off at the junkyard.

If anyone needs a complete B18A head let me know. I won't be using it.

As promised here are the pics. Yes they were rushed, and no I'm not sorry. Either way, more parts have now been crossed off the list. I called JE today and they said that the SRP pistons that are in there when coupled with the appropriate headgasket (.030) that it should yield around 11.5:1 compression which would perfect for this setup I believe.

However they are stock bore.

She hates hearing my cordless with a wirewheel on at like 2 in the morning. I have a garage though so i dont have to have the whole friggin engine stand in my room. Lol. GOOD LUCK!!

well, it's not the living room. I still live with my rents, which is funny, because apparently my room looked like a living room to those members of efhonda.com too.

Either way, thanks for looking so far. The next thing I'll be getting is more OEM honda gaskets and seals, in addition to the Golden Eagle LS/VTEC conversion kit for the setup.

Since I originally planned to build the b16a up I went ahead and bought B16A head studs, but the company is letting me trade send them back and swap them out with the GSR ones when I order the kit as whole. Pretty good for customer service I think.

I feel ya on the "bedroom" build , I'm doing a "basement" build myself but I have less room than you appear to lol. I'm in the process now of buying parts for my B20/vtec so this is inspirational to me good luck, I'll be following. you got a great start going there.

lol, I used to have one on the red chianti metallic car that the first pics are of above. I sold it with the car though because it was damaged beyond repair (don't ask how...). I suppose I'm done with paying almost a thousand dollars for JDM parts, when I could turn around and have a wreck the day after installing them (the car is my dd), and have to shell out the same amount of money to get them again.

USDM parts are so much easier to replace, and everybody has them too!

little update with pics of the cylinder walls and another blurry pic of the one of the pistons.

They look to be in really good condition imo. Enjoy.

as jason (eh3civic) said earlier, that is Beech Bend Raceway. And you are correct you will have to drive down here, whether you have your car done or not, because we're having our 3rd annual Honda-Tech meet on may 19th. It'll be fun.

lol, most people enjoy that pic, we were taking rig shots with a buddy of mine a while back and decided we would be goofy instead of serious... looks like it worked.

Thanks for the props guys, it's really encouraging me to devote more and more of my paychecks to this build. About the only place I don't pick up change I see is in the bathroom around the urinals....

I would like to have it done by the time of our meet but I doubt that will happen at all.
