Default Synthetic Motor Oil Options............

I have a newly rebuilt mild B18C1 with LS crank, rods, CP 10.0:1 compression pistons, ITR cams, ITR valvetrain, 270 cc injectors, and socketed OBD1 P72 ECU with custom chip programmed with uberdata. I have an upgraded stock airbox with K&N filter, Comptech header, Magnaflow cat, and Greddy EVO exhaust. I've got 180WHP and 131 WTQ.

After proper break in and about 1700 miles on this new motor, I've been running conventional 5W-30 oil. I will switch to synthetic real soon. Aside from the usual store bought brands, what other high performance oils are out there?

This car is pure street, and I don't need EVERY ounce of HP.

Some of the unique brands I know of are Royal Purple and Motul. What else is out there? How good are they? How good are the store bought brands like Castrol, Mobil 1, Valvoline, etc.?

royal purple is what i use personally just because i get it at cost which is like $5/quart, and filter cost me $2, so i do a $22 oil change every few months, worth the protection to me.

if i had to pay regular price for oil i would use mobil 1.

I heard Amsoil is good too. Mobil 1 is usually what I would get. I'm using Penzoil Platinum full synthetic right now because I got it for $2/quart.

This is all a matter of opinion.

Some people who sell super-expensive synthetic oils (Amsoil, Royal Purple, Motul, etc) claim that they are a whole lot better. My opinion? Don't waste your money. The difference between conventional oil and synthetic oil is much, MUCH greater than the difference between one synthetic oil and another, IMHO. I stick to major brand synthetic oil. Like goheel, I've noticed that Pennzoil Platinum is significantly less expensive than Mobil 1, so that's what I've been using, too. They sell both brands at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club.

I've used Amsoil, Royal Purple, and Mobile 1. Personally, there is -slight- difference between the 'big boys' (RP, amsoil...etc) and itso nly really worth it, if you can afford it no problems. Otherwise Mobil 1 is really good stuff. I love Royal Purple. but as a broke *** college kid,I had to goto mobil 1

In addition to this, changing oil after every 1500 with "cheaper" synthetic oil than say 3000 with Motul or RP, is FAR more beneficial. Frequent oil changes is key to keeping a motor alive. Period. Synthetic is synthetic, I'd feel 110% safe putting Supertech Full-Synthetic oil in my car. They probably get it from Mobil 1 anyway. Unless you don't mind spending GOBS of cash on oil thats just going to get dumped anyway, then go buy lots of Motul and $$$ Oil.

This is the most disputed topic out there....

ROYAL PURPLE!!! personally I think it's the best stuff you can buy from autopart stores....but then i've heard from many people that genuine honda 10w30 is still the best for honda cars

Moble 1 in my car. No complaints. Change the oil at 3k, and doesn't burn a drop.

I had the Motul in my car then switched to Mobil 1 just because of price. Motul is more expensive and a "higher" end oil because it supposedly helps ur engine run a little cooler than the Mobil 1 does but unless your making a lot of power and really heating ur engine up i really dont think it matters too much

i use mobil 1 and use oem oil filters which i get 4 free, oil i pay cost. i change every 3k miles and my valve cover, clean as can be.
there is a customer who uses redline oil in his dc5 and every time i change his oil its clean every time, he changes every 3750 approx. and he has 56k on it now.

all you guys are wasting your money if you change your synthetics every 3k miles. You can run synthetics to at least 10k miles before change. Hell, even Mobil 1 came out with the EP, which is guaranteed for 15K miles.
