If this is for street use (daily driving), just stick with 205/50-16. If you're asking because you're looking for higher performance, then concentrate on getting better, stickier tires, rather than wider tires. Performance differences between tire models are nearly always MUCH greater than differences due to greater treadwidth.
The Goodyear F1 GS-D3 is available in 205/50-16 and it's one of the best tires around - excellent traction on dry roads and in rain, reasonably long treadlife. It will probably give you much better performance than what you've been using up to now. (The F1 GS-D3 is a summer tire and should not be used in snow; I assume you have a separate set of winter tires, or another vehicle, for winter use.)
