Default D16z6 Rebuild....Opinions needed!!!

I have a stock d16z6 del sol that has bad compression. i was gonna re-build it stock but someone told me to put p29 or pm7 pistons into the block. last night we did that to a buddy of mines engine and the setup was:
d1z6 block w/ p29 pistons and a stock jdm sohc vtec head with some kind of cam in it but when we drove it, it felt like the timing was retarded or something was wrong with the ignition. what could that be?

Now....Which pistons should i put in there if i want to have a good daily driver and not worry about detonation or **** like that? I wanna run pump gas and have some better power than my stock d16z6. What should i expect?

You might want to tune it first.
Then maybe break it in.
