89D15CRXDX's Project Log
Well after many failed attempts to save the D15B2 I decided to go D15B JDM. But first I wanted to get rid of alot of stuff in my engine bay and degrease EVERYTHING and give it a good paint job. Having that engine in a greasy, off-color engine bay with hacked up wiring and a nasty *** greasy transmission doesn't seem appealing to me. So, I removed as much from the engine bay as I was comfortable with and cleaned most of the old stuff up. I removed the old engine and tranny and degreased the HELL out of all the metal inside the engine bay. Then I removed the trans from the motor and mounted my flywheel and stage three clutch on my D15B. While I was doing this I degreased the tranny with brake cleaner and gasoline and sprayed it down compressed air. After that, it was painted with cast aluminum paint as well as the block on the D15B. While I was doing THIS I painted the engine bay and got it ready for the motor swap. Next on the list is rewiring the DX harness for the OBD-1 motor and painting the underside of the hood (the car was light blue and someone painted it flat black, which I hate). I went over to my cousins house to help him gut his place for a remodel. Well in the garage was a D15B5 (I think) from a 93 Civic with the wiring harness still attached and with NO PLUGS CUT!!! I removed it and am starting with that harness for the OBD-1 injectors. I bought a P28 ECU and OBD-0 to OBD-1 conversion harness from Xenocron and I'm psyched. I also bought a 4 wire O2 off of Ebay for $55. This should be fun in this little *** car...lol Sorry for the engine bay pics, my phone was pretty dirty and so was the lens but you get the jist of it.

Let me know what you think so far. Constructive criticizm is always welcomed. I will keep you all updated.

The car itself looks like a piece right now. The fenders are rusted and the windshield's busted. Other than that, the car doesn't look like it's in that bad of shape. The chassis has 184,000 miles on it and the frame doesn't show it at all. I traded my 86 Prelude for this car and $1000 so any way you cut it, he basically paid me to take this thing. $500 and I have a car with paint and a brand new windshield. Not a bad deal.
Alright, I got a couple of updates. I got the tranny mated to the engine along with the clutch/flywheel. I have installed the engine/tranny into the engine bay and all I have to do is hook up my injectors, hook up my VTEC, hook up my O2 sensor, and finish a few last thing details along with the axles. I pulled the valve cover to install the old motor mount and damn is this engine spotless inside. It should run nice. When I'm all done here in a couple days, I will post engine running and inside car pics/movies. I'm so excited to finally get this over with. It's been a huge hurtle to get over. It's going to feel good to hear that thing run once again. This time it's VTEC powered. Anyway, without futher adieu, here's the pics.

This is the engine/tranny before being installed.

This is the engine while still soldering and reconnecting wires. My only problem is finding the plug for the coolant temperature sensor so I can relocate it to the thermostat housing. Anyway, I think it's coming along nicely. What do you all think?

Alright. I got the motor all wired up today. I have fuel pressure but no spark. I checked my wiring at the distributor plug, all correct. I wired them color to color except for the yellow/green signal wire(fat white). Also, I wired my MPFI wiring into the plug for the CYP and CKP and it's all OK. I couldn't imagine them being a cause of spark not being present. It would still spark even if the sensors were off. I am running a P28 ECU on this motor. I used a Xenocron OBD0 to OBD1 conversion harness. I have power going to the distributor. But how can I check to see if I have any signal from the ECU to the ignitor? I used the 88-91 DX harness (DPFI) and converted it to MPFI first. Then I converted it to OBD1 using the instructions by Kurtz on PGMFI.org and Xenocron's harness instructions. I triple checked my wiring. But for some reason, I still have no spark. It's a P08 distributor but that shouldn't make a difference either, it should spark. Anyway, if anyone can let me know what I can do to get spark or even to check if I'm getting a spark signal from the ECU, that would be awesome.

Can anyone help? I'm racking my brain. What was I supposed to do with the knock sensor? I wired it into my OBD-1 conversion harness and cut the OBD-0 wire. I also added the two prong sensor in the back of the block off of the D15B2 and plugged it in. But once again, I can't imagine that not making the dizzy spark. I'm lost. Does anyone have any suggestions? Do you think it could be from me maybe crossing the two wires from the ECU for the MPFI conversion to the dizzy? The blue/green and blue/yellow wires? On the 92-95 harnesses, they are the CKP sensor.

I'm going to replace the dizzy tomorrow with a D15B7 dizzy and see if that helps. Also, The only grounds I have are the three grounds at the thermostat housing. Which other grounds should I have? Tranny to chassis and valve cover? Does anyone have any pictures of their ground setups? I have no idea of where they go. Any help would be appreciated. I know that on the D15B2 that there is a bolt hole in the front of the valve cover and it goes to the rad support. Well with this motor (JDM D15B) there is no bolt hole in the front, so where would it go? Please Please help.
