Default Oil: for a built ls-vtec

i have always ran normal oil.... seems syntetic is the way to go... any precautions or anything?

Run normal oil for at least the first thousand miles. Then switch over to synthetic. 100% synthetic is best, but anything with more synthetic is better.

Simply put, regular oil COULD be as good as synthetic, if it were refined to ONE molecular size. As it is, though, its refined as much as the refiner is willing to pay. Then, he adds additives until the oil has the properties he wants. The result is something that sometimes has great variability in how it performs over its lifespan.

Synthetics, on the other hand, are always a fixed recipie. The exact amount of base synthetic oil components are blended, and then any additives are added in a fixed ratio. They aren't necessarily any BETTER, just more consistent.

If you change oil every 1,000 miles or less, regular oil may in the long run be just as good, and much cheaper. But, if you want the best, synthetics are best. BUT, if you want to ask WHICH synthetic is best or which conventional oil is best, bring out the fire retardant suit.

break in the motor with regular oil or the rings with not seat properly. then switch over to amsoil. it may cost a little more than most synthetics, but it is better and lasts longer. i change my oil every 10,000 miles with amsoil. and i have had no problems out of it.

break in the motor with regular oil or the rings with not seat properly. then switch over to amsoil. it may cost a little more than most synthetics, but it is better and lasts longer. i change my oil every 10,000 miles with amsoil. and i have had no problems out of it.
10k miles?!? **** man... i change my oil every month or two....

Do any of you guys know of that oil that is supposed to last for like 100,000 miles before you have to change it? I say it on the news about six months ago.

When I first got my motor back I ran the crappiest 10w-40 dino, then I switched to Mobil 1 10w-30. I noticed all of a sudden I had mad leaks everywhere. S switched to Castrol GTX 10w-30 and no more leaks. I think synthetics are to thin, plus I if you change your oil every 1k miles then who needs synthetic anyway

Most synthetics flow better than non-synthetics - that's the point. They get into and flow through the little nooks and crannies better than dino oil. As a result, when you get high stresses that normally "squeeze out" dino oil out of the crannies, you have a thin film of synthetic in the area where with dino, you'd have nothing.

But, actually, like you said, if you don't do anything funky (like race, run hard, etc.) then dino oil every 1,000 miles is nearly as good.
