Default 96 civic ex stereo

I need to replace the factory unit in my 96 civic ex. When I went to crutchfield it says:

"Because of the factory keyless entry system in your vehicle, you will need to keep the factory radio in the vehicle and relocate it behind the dash. Detailed instructions are provided when you purchase a receiver from Crutchfield".

Is this true or is there a way around it.

Is there any other factory cd players from other honda models that will fit into the factory civic opening?

Thanks
Jack

Yes, it's true.

No, there aren't any other players that will fit that opening because of the angled/rounded edge on the left side.

You could just leave the deck alone and put your aftermarket head unit in the slot behind the cupholders like many, many people have done.

To put it behind the cupholder is there any kit needed and do you have to disconnect factory radio? I currently have a tape player behind the cup holders.

Here is what you do, get aftermarket HU, get stock pocket for where the cass. is, get this kit... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...1570B and this harness... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...HAK3B
Then get yourself an aftermarket alarm and connect key-less entry, then you can pull your stock HU and slave cass.

Or do as B18C_EJ8 suggests and install it where the cass. is, no kit is needed, but get these 2 harnesses... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...HA02B
http://www.scosche.com/scosche...A02RB

the second harness, [HA02BR] will plug into the stock HU, but all you need is the powers, [constant and acc.] and ground, the rest can be removed, [speaker wires, orange illumination and blue amp/ant. control] connect it along with the aftermarket HUs harness to the first harness, [HA02B].
When you remove the cass. it will be apparent how to install the aftermarket HU.

Hint, if you mount the aftermarket HU back a little, [so it's flush with the face plate on] you can pull the face off the cass. do a little trimming and use it as a dummy face in place of the aftermarkets face plate, if done right it will all look stock. 94

I beg to differ. I was able to install a stereo in my cousin's 98 Civic DX, where the stock radio is mounted.

I was under the impression that the 96-98 Civics all used the same radio. Let me know if I'm wrong.

Okay, let me rephrase. Any single-din radio will actually fit, however, because of the angled/rounded left edge, nothing but a 96-98 Civic radio will look right... There will be a gap if you put any other radio in.
