Default How to Install Del Sol Armrest Covers

Del Sols are known for the crease that develops on the armrest. The vinyl on the door panels is stretched over the plastic mold to create the close fit, but the adhesive used bond the vinyl to the plastic mold isn't strong enough to hold the tension of the vinyl for a long time (10-15 years). So, I could either have them reupholstered ($$$), or I could use the Del Sol Armrest covers available on ebay. There isn't a lot of information on these, so it looked like a good opportunity for a write up.

Parts List:
-3M Double Sided Automotive Tape
-Armrest covers
-Paper Towels
-Cleaning agent (Rubbing alcohol)
-Patience

First, lets take a look at our goal here. We want to install these and make them look good, but last a long time. Good example:

So lets get to it. All the surfaces here need to be as clean as possible so that the tape can bond to just the vinyl, not dirt/grime and vinyl. I opted to use rubbing alcohol becuase I know it works extremely well.

Now go ahead and clean everything. Wipe down the entire door panel just so it's all clean.

Also, it's a good idea to wipe down the back of the armrest covers to remove dirt, oil, ect.

Look at all the junk that came off the door panels I though to be "clean"

Now we're going to need that 3M tape.

Trace the border of the back of the armrest covers with the tape. Try to touch the sticky side of the tape as little as possible to avoid getting oil from your fingers on there.

Now, with the tape right were you want it, peal back the red protective covering for the other side of the tape.

Place them on the door panel. Make sure you put lots of pressure on them to make sure the tape has the best chance at sticking.

NO MORE CREASE!!!!!!

Hope this helped. I have the name of the ebay guy that has these. There are only a few left, so go get them before someone else does. They normally go for around $80 to $90 on ebay, but through me you can get them for $75. PM me for detail!

And all this time I thought they were known just for their hefty curb weight.

Good writeup.

93 Del Sol S' curb weight - 2277lbs. Really not that bad. An Integra is over 3k pounds, but I don't hear of people complaining about their weight.

yeah people just mention the weight of a del sol because of the irony. its a small compact sports car, yet it weighs more than a civic coupe and even sedan i believe, might be wrong.

back on topic

nice write-up. i dont have a sol, my buddy does and it has a crease like stated.. so decided to look at the finished product

compare a del sol si to a civic si.. only few pounds difference..

sure i guess if you get a hb cx model and do no upgrades it will be lighter..

cx hb come with them stylish seats.. and all the good options like nothing..
