just installed aem ems and now after 8krpms if i shift (or even just go into neutral) i hear a LOUD kesshhhhh (soft k) sound, kinda like a bov but more of a short burst. any ideas on what it could be? here is the set up:
-b16b motor and lsd trans in a 96 civic cx hatch
-6 puck sprung clutch with 8lb flywheel + n1 pulley
-AEM EMS street tune (not complete yet still working on it)
-basic i/h/e internals are stock.
first it started doing it around 9k now its seems to do it at lower rpms too like above 8k, any ideas?
since were playing the "guess that noise" game i also got a grinding noise that comes from the timing belt area when my fan turns on, water pump maybe?
update: i noticed today if i rev in neutral it does it too, so its not the trans at all.

ive had an aem cai before and i know the sound your referring to, usually 92-95 civics do it the most, but this is different sound, its very loud.
i have a sri with the BPI velocity stack and kn filter, it never did it before. i thought it sounded more like it was coming from the clutch...
anyone else?

interesting, where was the air leaking from? also i noticed today if i rev in neutral it does it too, so its not the trans at all.

well, i dont have a clamp on the pcv hose that goes to the intake, maybe air is forcing its way out throught there? im gonna remove my intake for a run and see what happens, ill post the update later.

ok i checked it, took off intake assembly and it still does it.

did you ever figure out why?
did you ever figure out why?
i have the same issue, and it actually sounds like a turbo spool as well. Heres what it is.
on the B's the crank puts out way more pressure at 8k rpms than it can inhale.
At high loads the IM is taking all the air from the intake area, and not from your vac ports (PCV) I had just dealt with this issue myself.
Air is forcing its way out from either your valve cover or somewhere from the block itself.
if you really wanna know if this is your problem, hook up a vac gauge to your PCV and see if it ever goes into positive pressure, and if it does, thats your issue. I bored out some of the ports for vac/pcv, installed 2 bungs in the valve cover to a catch can (endyn setup) and it REALLY seems to help
PM me if that works, since that sound worries me, and its not the intake cause with the OEM airbox it does it too
oh and if you have an oil leak somewhere on your block, this is where the air is excaping. Positive engine pressure is a big deal on FI, and high reving NA engines.
Oh and when you watch that vac gauge go into positive pressure you will know what im talking about.

i always assumed it was the weapon r intake i had but i don't hear the same thing on my manual so idk
the pcv system sounds plausible because as he said it does more sound like air escaping than being sucked in.

Sounds like a small exhaust leak. Sometimes, if you have the factory style "spring bolts" connecting the header to the cat or test pipe, they will actually pull apart when you rev very high or shift at a high rpm because of engine movement. The header pulls away from the cat for a split second and you hear a "pfft" sound--which of course is exhaust leaking for that split second, then as engine movement stops the pipes are sealed again, and you don't hear any leak.
Its sporadic--which is what you are describing.

hmmm, i have some work to do, either way im going to run a catch can because i am boosting soon.

i think this may be the reason because it does it at lower rpm's if i hit my two step which causes a lot of engine rocking.
either way i got a lot of things to do to figure this out. thanks a lot for all the great responses guys.

The cat area is a high possibility, but you would KNOW if its a leak by the cat, you would have about 0 power, and wanna kill yourself.
If your doing the catch can setup make sure you dont get too small of hoses since that will cause restriction.
Check around the block for oil leaks, maybe a leak down test to see when air could come from.
A leaking cat>collector gasket will sound like somebody blowing spit through a mcdonnalds straw, this **** sounds like a pin hole leak somewhere since the cat leak and the engine turbine sound are from 2 totally different locations (noise wise), if you move your head around you can tell the cat leak vs the engine block BOV/spool sound.
I have drivin my car around checking for leaks this way because you NEED load for things to appear such as leaks.
Try aligning your exhaust. The cat could be a tad bit off, and any kinda movement could open up a leak. this is why i hate the exhaust, and want a flex pipe ASAP

i doubt an exhuast leak will take away all my power, i doubt it would even take 5hp. thanks for the rest of the info though, ill check my block for leaks and such.

your lucky then, cause on my Y8 any kinda leak kills it, i have 0 throttle response, and when i replace whatever exhaust gasket that blew, response is back to normal.
yea man its gotta be an exhaust leak or block leak. I hate the sound, it just doesnt sound clean
