Painting grille without removing?

Just take it off. The time you spend masking off the area, etc will out weight just removing the damn thing. If youre going to do it, do it right the first time
Not to mention how do you plan on sanding and priming it while its still on the car?

sounds perfect for an "in the driveway" job... seriously.. if this is really what the OP wants to do, he should pull the grill and take it to a body shop... no sense in ruining the front end of a brand new car...
