if there a difference in clutches between a 2003 and a 2001?

if there a difference in clutches between a 2003 and a 2001?
I hop in a friends 2001 today for a drive, and his clutch feels like it sticks alot. He says its been that way for the past 2 years, but to me it feels like a sticky master cylinder. In the 2003, it is nice and smooth, where as in his, i feel like im driving a stage 3 clutch without the bite =/. Is there a difference?
