My guess is there is no spring just a strut so the wood is above the upper control arm to keep it off of the upper fender and give enough wheel clearance for it to roll. Really ******* sucks man... Hope this doesnt take you out of the game.
Edit: after looking there is no strut/spring at all... its just the knuckle and the UCA... the wood is keeping the clearance.
