JDM SIR Hoods who has had a problem with them flying up on them?
i was just curious because i am about to finish my car and i am worried that its going to fly up on me.
whats your experience?
anything you would suggest from not letting that happen?

If you use a hood latch or hood pins, nothing is going to happen. The only time people have problems is if they forget to fully latch the hood, or if using only hood pins and they forgot to put the pins in. This is a function of proper operation and not what kind of hood you have...be it JDM or USDM
well for those that don't know.
there has to be modification for it to fit. the latch on the hood has to be pushed back all the way and the t bar latch should be pushed all the way forward.
there are two people i have read about that had there hoods fly up on them
i am just lead to believe it is because of the t-bar.

yes i did that myself on my JDM front end. mine flew up on me not once but TWICE!!!! and it wasnt because it wasnt properly installed but because i forgot to fully latch the hood. one time was when i was on my way to the track, one o the worst days of my life
haha im an idiot but then i got hood pins put in and I that kinda reminded me better to fully close the hood :D

Ive had 3 hoods pop on me ha, well 2 hoods, one was twice
Once was on the highway, was a fiberglass hood with licking hood pins, the pins were locked, something happened and thye just let go, ripped the hood off the hinges, cringed over the smashed windshield and drove home
Next time I was just pulling outta my buddies house after ******* around with eachothers cars. Forgot to set the hood pins
SMASH
Another windshield.
Next day, still same windshield broken and same hood all mangled and bent
SMASH!!!
That time just driving at like 25mph to. Wasnt my fault that time, dad was under my hood looking at my oil lines because I hadasked him to previously, he left the car, I jumped in. On my way to the store....
He's lucky it wasnt a new hood and windshield. He even had the nerve to laugh about it
That **** was 2 years ago, was absolutely ridiculous

I had a hood pop up on me and it was a terrible experience. For the ef8 hood to close theres a couple of ways. You can use an ef8 tbar...some modifications need to be made using spacers, but if you use an ef3/6/7 tbar the hood will close properly and be secure enough so you don't have to worry about your rigged ef8 tbar not properly holding the hood closed.

HAHAHA great story telling abilites! i felt like i was there.
my friend had a 94 MR2 turbo and we just got done installing a alternator. then he goes to put the battery terminal on and forgots to put the pin in the hood pins. we go on the freeway to test out his car and go eat. then all of the sudden a SRT4 blast by us when he decided to gun it to 125 mph. the the hood flew up and SMASH !!!
the crazy things was that the windshield didn't break but actually the moonroof broke and we were both covered in glass!!! i just started to laugh....
anyway about the hood latch.
i just want to make sure people with JDM conversions on there ef8 or ef9 with regular metal hoods have not had a problem with there hoods flying up.....
BUT i also want to know who has had there hood fly up and what caused it.
if somebody had there hood fully latched and it still flew up, what was the problem?

the problem is basically with the jdm hood you have to relocate the latch which im sure you know.
however in doing so if you dont move it far enough foward, the hood may give you that second latch sound, and appear to click down, but is being held down by a thread.
the way i did it was to modify both the female ring part, AND move back the latch on the hood itself.
if you dont dremmel out the holes on the latch bolts on the hood itself, and move it far enough, then the hook part attached to that latch will not grab fully, and as you guys put it, "SMASH"
the final part of the mod is to use washers to prop out the radiator support, which moves the u shaped grabber foward. again, it might click with the usdm support in its original location, but is that a gamble you want to take?
EDIT also i forgot to mention, do all these mods without the front bumper on, so you can look directly at the latch and see you have a strong connection.

Lol, thank god I sprung for that ef7 t-bar...but it seems like everyone who's had an ef9/ef8 hood latch fail on them was due to poor ghetto rigging/modifying of the hood latch on the USDM chassis. Anyone have after pics of what caused the failure of their hood latch? Pics of mangled t-bars or stripped hood latch holes would help shed more light into this

Mine flew up when it was not shut on all the way
fixed that problem real quick
Shortly after I go a new front end and my hood would constently come look and pop open while I was on the freeway. Never flew open but would unlatch

Holy Hell, I didn't know about this! I will be getting a JDM front end soon so I'm glad I read this.
Sorry for those who went through this, but I'm glad you guys are letting us know your stories. Props to you all!

Mine flew up too, theres alot of people out there with JDM fronts that did. For me, my latch on my hood broke. Im running hoodpins from now on on JDM fronts.
I followed the proper instructions on how to fit the latch/tbar all that ****.
I too had the hood pop syndrome. If that ****'s wobbling back and forth it isn't fitting right. There are slight differences around the headlight buckets I believe (chase correct me on this one w/your clip) but the **** won't ever fit right.
jdm fronts now a days are too damn $$ for some old used jdm plastic, save ur money and idolize someone else's whip, the usdm front's work IMO and i had the other junt for a long time
sure it was sexy, but not enough to warrant that risk of the hood fly up
my old ride after several hood fly up moments, looks like the new owner got smarter

before it was all screwed up

I may of not shut the hood properly for all this to happen, but the emergency catch won't stop the hood.

thats the only way to go. I have holes for them I'm just waiting on the best looking hood pins to arrive.
Either that or the Tein Hood dampers should prevent it too since they are gas shocks and all.
That would also help with some stability

It's really not the ONLY way to go... I plan on making my own hood fastening system.
http://www.panelfast.com
I plan on taking a couple of the weld plates and making it so my hood is a little offset in the rear to help get the hot air out of the engine. I'll probably use about 7, 1 on each corner and 1 inbetween each on the outer edges. Quick release, peel the hood off and then have full access to the engine bay all with 7 1/4 turns of a flathead or allen head wrench. Not bad IMHO.
EDIT: Keep in mind this is quite a bit more secure then just 2 hood pins, I don't have to worry about theives and its fairly inexpensive.
