Swapping Different Year CRX HF Transmissions & Clutch Kit Question
**********I did a search but still have this question**********
I have a 1991 CRX HF with a stock transmission that has recently been making some metal on metal ginding sounds. The noise started out being minor and sporatic, but now it's really bad and does it ALL the time. Rather than rebuilding it I've decided to take the easier route and swap it out with another stock HF trannsmission and I found one but it's from a 1989 HF, not a 1991 like mine.
From what I've gathered from some searching is that the number of splines and clutch sizes are different in different year transmissions:
- 1989-1991 CRX transmission have 20 splines (So I'm good in the # of splines dept.)
- 1989 CRX Clutches are 200mm (on my replacement transmission)
- 1991 CRX Clutches are 212mm (on my current transmission)
So my question to you guys that know this stuff is what do I need to get to be able to get this 1989 transmission to work in my 1991 CRX?
Can I re-use my 212mm clutch (only 8 months old), pressure plate or do I need to get a 200mm clutch, pressure plate, etc (basically the clutch kit) inorder to be able to use this?
I'm confused as to what I can reuse or what I can use because I know they have the same spline number they'll fit in the shaft but I'm wondering if the larger 212mm clutch will fit in the 1989 transmission housing itself of if I have to get the smaller 200mm clutch, will it have any issues with the OEM flywheel?
Sorry for the long list of what are probably stupid question to you guys but I'm not that much of a wrench head and I'd appreciate any helpful advice or pointers.
Thanks for your help with this fellas, I can't wait to get my REX back on the road where it belongs!

sounds like you might have to switch to an 89 flywheel and clutch, but i would just see if it bolts up the way it is now first. If it bolts up easy then it will probably work. It could be honda just decided to go with a beefier flywheel and clutch assembly but not changing the tranny
just swap out the transmission and leave everything else as it is - all 89-91 transmissions are interchangeable - as long as the transmission input shaft fits into the clutch disc (same number of splines), you are good to go
That's what I kind of want to do but I'm not sure if the difference in using my larger 212mm clutch on the tranny that's used to a 200mm clutch will be?
Thanks fellas.
Thanks fellas.
no difference - all the 89-91 transmissions are the same - the 212mm diameter clutch just has more contact surface on the flywheel than the 200mm diameter clutch
Cool...that might just save me from having to get a new clutch kit...but would you guys recommend me getting it as cheap insurance? Might make sense to get the 212mm clutch kit since it has more surface area I guess....thanks!

Yeah well that's how long I've owned it and the previous owner said he just changed it out not too long before that. I'll have to look through the paperwok they gave me with it to eithe verify if it was changed shortly before I bought it...damn, I'll have to dig for it somewhere. I guess I'll have a better idea when I have it removed and inspect it to see how worn the clutch is. I just like to know where I'm starting off at.
When I bought it I wanted to be up to date on the routine maintnance cycles so I changed:
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Wires
Distributor Cap
Distributor Rotor
Oil Change
Only think I didn't check was the MT fluid, so here I am screwed with the busted transmission...they probably never took care of it and the one thing I forgot to check/change bite me in the a$$!

if you aren't sure, then go ahead and put a new clutch kit in it - nothing like going to all the trouble of pulling the transmission, putting in another one and then find out in a short while that you should of done the clutch while it was apart - make sure you change the pilot bearing in the flywheel and get the flywheel resurfaced if it looks at all questionable
