Default OT: How can I legalize my legit B18C5 swap?

I purchased the B18C5 out of 98 ITR # 1007 a month ago, as the owner of the ITR is going K-series this year. It still has all of the original VIN tags on the motor, tranny, etc. and he (obviously) has the title and misc. paperwork. His ITR has never been stolen or anything like that, but I'm looking to properly legalize my swap now that it's in my car (in case something happens to his car or mine, I would like to have a paper trail of why there's an ITR motor in my civic for insurance and police).

Any tips on working with the DMV or whoever I need to deal with? Will a simple notarized Bill of Sale take care of things? Or does it depend on the state?

P.S.: There's no emissions in MN where I live or anything that really inspects your car at all. I'm just happy that I found a legit, out-of-the-original-ITR swap that's 1 year older than my car (if I move to a state with emissions) so I'm trying to do things right on paper and respect the ITR community.

Thanks for the help!

In CA, you'd just take it to the REF and smog it and ask him what you need to do.
Since you got the USDM ITR, it's a hell of a lot easier. You'd just the need ECU and keep everything stock. Stock CAT, headers, carb legal engine components. And you should be able to pass the REF quite easily and BAR that shiz!

Don't forget to bring the paperwork

hes not asking how to legally smog the engine... he asking how to legally show he owns the engine with different vin#'s if he gets pulled over or anything like that. or maybe im wrong:

easy. draw up a reciept "i'm buying a transmission and engine from so and so ...etc....", have a signature for both buyer and seller, a place for the drivers license of both parties (used incase either of you move out of state, and to verify the vin# of car did once belong to seller) , clearly state the vin# for both transmission and engine if different. if same, state that both tranny and engine are from the same car and bring this paper along with copy of it to get notarized,>>>you sign the paperwork at the notory public. copy goes to seller original is buyers

its pretty common sense really. if the seller doesnt want to do all this, your only option is to get a reciept make sure the vin# is on it and you both sign reciept. and i would bring a witness and have them sign aswell. good luck

then you bring notorized paperwork to dmv and they will note the different vin# in the computer. make sure you get a separate print out of this notation.

Hehe, to be able to BAR it you have to go through the State REF Smog check. He's the one that signs you off so you can go to the DMV for your stickers stating you have a 1.8L DOHC VTEC engine with the VIN JH...etc, etc.

Can't BAR it if it doesn't pass smog

Doesn't apply outside of CA. Outside this state, laws are pretty lenient.
