Default MFactory Final Drive gears after 1 year of racing

Hi guys, I am currently rebuilding my transmission and going to the new 5.2FD from MFactory. Last year I ran their 4.64 FD and here is what it looks like after about 1,000 miles of pure race use 1 year later. This includes standing starts (drag race style for every race, on sticky tires!). note: what looks like little scratches is actually small hairs from the shop rag that I used to clean the old oil off. There are actually zero scratches on either gear.

ring gear:

shaft gear:

zero chips, zero pits, zero scaring, zero rounding of the gear edges

Wow. That's some great engineering right there. If only every parts company could make parts with that level of quality . . .

I might sell it later in the year after I decide I want to keep the 5.2FD and not go back to a 4.64. I'm 99% sure I will be staying with the 5.2. You guys will be the 1st to know if/when I sell it.

BTW, I'm also going to a Kaaz LSD for next year with clutch plates and selling my 1 year old Quaife LSD. The old LSD is in great shape just like the FD gears and is just now listed on E-bay. Selling with bearings & spedo gear installed for only $600 OBO!

Im looking hard at a Quaife. Any particular reason why you're changing?? This will be going into a street car. (I've already ordered my 5.2 fd )

I'm still getting some wheel spin from the inside tire under extreme hard cornering, so I'm going to try a clutch type LSD this year to see if it helps more than the gear type LSD. The quaife was WAY better than the OEM open diff and I would recommend it to anyone. The nice thing about the Quaife is you can install it and never have to rebuild it. The Kaaz will need new clutch material after a while, but I'm trying for every little bit of grip I can get when accelerating out of a turn so I'm willing to rebuild it ever few years. The Kaaz "might" be better at keeping the power down and I'm going to find out for shure. I would keep them both, but I need the $$ ...so I'm selling the quaife.

The Kaaz also has a definite advantage when one wheel off the ground. Not really a big deal for street driving, but I'm sure it helps in roadracing.

is there any advantages to the Kaaz over the quaife? or vice versa?

With my OEM ITR diff, which is "similar" to the Quaife, I thought all was fine, and wasn't sure why everyone was making a big deal about diffs. After driving the lude with the OPM clutch diff, I am starting to appreciate the hype

I'll be on Kaaz this year too. Got a good deal on it with some cams and valvesprings (strangely enough). I'm keeping the OPM LSD in the spare diff. What fluid are you going to run, Kaaz? Have you done the figure-8-for-thirty-minutes break in procedure yet?

The figure 8s suck, especially in a track only car with no PS.

I tried various fluids, and I can tell you that the Kaaz stuff is too expensive and too thick. Shifting just didn't feel right with it. I've been using GM Synchromesh Friction Modified. It works quite well, and it seems to handle the Texas heat fine. I need to put a temp gauge on the tranny to see just how hot it's getting, but that's another story.

The LSD chatters some when turning at slow speeds, but I've noticed no problems with it on the track.

David R. drove my car at MSR last season and thought the steering was "violent." Seems the combination of no PS on a gutted rack (not a looped rack), along with a Kaaz set to 100% lockup, and a bit of power makes the steering wheel hard to handle when putting down the power in a turn. I never noticed it myself until David said something, to be honest.

I have yet to install the Kaaz LSD, it's sitting on my floor. I'm waiting for the 5.2FD to show up to install it all at one time. I'm going to run the Kaaz fluid for the brake in (I live near a parking lot that is often empty). I will most likely use AMSOIL Synthetic Gear Lube SAE 80W-90 after that.

I would pull that VSS gear if I were you. You cannot buy that part just by itself. If you need another one you'll have to buy the diff with it from honda... unless you have a hook up at honda.

Im thinking about placing a bid on this. Am I running any risks of buying one of these used that was raced? I know you said its in good condition and I would love to save some money over buying it new for a grand.
