Default Limp Mode???

Can our cars enter limp mode? As the engine cutting off our top speed or restricting it? Last night as I was on the freeway, my speed kept on dropping (going like 70-80) and when i try to step on the gas it would drop even more. I pulled over and couldn't find anything but when i turned on the ignition there was a rattling noise of some sort, also when i tap on the gas pedal. I had CEL (EVAP) on for a while and it was driving fine until last night.

So I offed the CEL by disconnecting the battery and just was able to drive home (2hrs) going 60mph. Can it be the CEL? Or something else?

Since I don't know a lot about cars. I wanted some info about what's wrong before I take it to the mechanic and not get rip off. Thanks for any help.

yes it can enter limp mode or safe mode. the engine restricts itself from revving over 4k to keep things safe. did you throw any codes?

i took it to the shop and they said that my catalac converter was plugged and oxygen sensor was bad. So i needed to replaced both of those and it cost me 1100 with labor. Still a lot tho.

DAMN! isnt it like 100 + 100 labor for a cat (high flow) and like 100 for an o2 sensor?
