help choosing engine, b16 b17 b18
I am in the market for a 88-91 CRX, just waiting to find a good buy in my area. i'm getting everything worked out currently as far as stages and the swap goes. done plenty of searching/reading and i need help figuring out which engine would be best for me. the rex would be my extra car, so down time isn't an issue, neither is daily drivability.
i plan to boost a few months after i do teh swap along with moderate cams, etc.
i have a h23 in my garage.....but because of size and some missing pieces i decided against it
b20 is out cause it has less potential for boost.
so i am looking at
1988-1991 JDM B16A
1992-1993 USDM B17A1
1990-1991 USDM non-VTEC B18A1
best as i can tell these 3 would be best for me. almost all are in my price range, low compression, cable tranny and/or OBD0
if u can post any info u know on these engines/personal experiance/potential for boost/weaknesses would be great.
but plz no "b16s are overrated" "my stock d16 pwned this b20 swapped crx" flamming/random statement crap

That's all this thread will be, half due to the population of what's left of HT the other half of you not doing enough to help us, help you.
Frankly if you searched read or just did what some of us older tech heads did TRY it, you wouldn't need this thread.

what else could i do to help u help me? what more info do u need?
i have searched, been searching reading posts for several days now.
and what do u expect me to do? buy all three motors and have them sitting in a nice little row in my garage till i find a CRX? then install each one, boost and try them out?
i asked for experiences and weaknesses in them. i didn't ask "yo, i bot me a car yo, what enjine is best?"

b16
b17s are getting harder and harder to find, and when you do, thier expensive.
if your for sure going to boost it soon then i say go LS, but for more fun now, b16 is the way to go. i hope this was helpful

All you've said they all suit you and all fall in your budget.
Having motors sitting around making mistakes, yes I've done it... so have the people before me. I know people post here to aviod mistakes, but i'm starting to think they are good.
I can sit here and tell you till i'm blue in the face XYZ is better then ABC. You don't know I'm not pulling that out of my *** or quoting someone who told me. Even a poster who knows how to sort the pile of BS cant really tell.
But since i'm feeling nice i'll give a quick pro con, but so you can learn and figure what works best for you I'll not list whats a pro to me and whats a con Ill give some facts and you can make up your own mind based off that
b16 = no torque short tranny already has vtec
b17 = short tranny still not torquey rare has vtec
b18 = cruddy tranny alot more mid range wheezes out top end poor flowing head no vtec cheap as cake.
Frankly if you are going to ask for a spoonful of info, b18a/b b16 tranny work from there to what ever goals you have.
