recently put a new timing belt, tensioner and tensioner spring in with my swap.

the timing belt is flapping around a lot so i took off the top timing cover to see wth that noise was. the timing belt is moving around a lot but doesn't look like it skipped a tooth or anything. the front side of the belt is tight but the back side is little looser and the top of the cam gears has barley any play in it when pushed down.

help! i want to drive my car finally

 

Sounds like its freyed or something? Did u run it with the cover off to see?

doesnt look like it's shredded or anything. i ran it with the top cover off.

 

if its loose on the back (intake side) just redo the tensioner

what do you mean redo?

 

loosen the tensioner bolt and take out some slack...
sounds like the spring is not tensioned as far as it should be

oh ok. do i need to turn the crank to take out a little slack? does both side need to be a little tight or little loose?

 

you want to front of the timing belt to be tight and the rear to be loose. then loosen up the tensioner get out the slack and tighten the tensioner.

just tried but the belt still feels the same. havent started it up yet tho. hopefully itll fix it

 

You realize that makes no sense right? Why would starting it, solve any loose belt problem?

What kind of slack are we talking about?

i meant to see if it worked or not...theres about half an inch on the rear, intake side.

 

sorry to threadjack, but if your belt is a little bit too tight is there any consequences?

My belt flops on my intake cam gear side. I dunno why. My belt was just replaced last summer so no worries. But Someone told me my engine has a harmonic tensioner/balancer that adjusts the tension while the engine is running.

hum, but its reallly loud and looks and sounds dangerous...

 

Is there a chance you bought the wrong timing belt? Maybe a little too short or too long?...My friends timing belt kept flopping around on his LS engine because his tensioner kept coming loose...just a thought.

i got it from pro street. but damn if it is, whata bitch its guna be to change out with engine in now

 

I dunno if this helps but the belt should have P-somthing marked on it to identify if it's right (if it's an OEM belt). Like for my b16a2, it's a P2T ecu and my belt had it marked on it when I bought mine from Honda.

 

.hue, does the motor have a shaved head or thinner headgasket? if so, you will have to tension it MORE then the stock tensioner does on it's own.

 

its very simple to fix this problem. I used to hate doing timing belts. but since ive taken off and put back on over 100 timing belts i see it very simple.

put the motor on top dead center.
loosen the tensioner bolt.
use sometype of prybar or something to push the tensioner all the way up.
tighten the tensioner bolt.
it should be tight enough when you do this.

lastly to see if the timing belt is loose dont turn on the motor. Just simply turn it over with a rachet on the crank pulley bolt.

Stock head and used a brand new OEM head gasket.

i cant really turn it fast enough to if it going to flap around.

 

my guess is :

wrong t belt
bad tensoner
forgot one of the washers on either side of the crankshaft pulley

 

hey i had that problem. it was on my b18 tho. started it up and the belt was flopping like a bitch so i killed the engine right away. then i loosened the tensioner, pushed the tensioner up so the belt would be tighter, then tightened it. started it up and ran smooth. wrong belt or not enough tension on the belt could be your problem.
