Default offset range for a 89 CRX HF, 15x7 ??

Hi, I hope some fellow racers out there can give me a hand. I have a 89 CRX HF that I use in autocross. I'm currently looking at upgrading to Kosei K1 15x7 wheels and 205/50R15 Kumho V710s. I'm looking on TireRack and they have these listed for my car with a +38mm offset. I've also found them with a +45mm offset if I search using a 2000 Civic Si.

I've talked to TireRack and they're saying that the +38mm wheels will fit. I currently have 2000 Civic Si rims on my car (15x6 +45mm) with Toyo RA1s - I know, not great autocross tires, but I got them at off-season for under $100. I attached the best picture I have off hand showing the wheel clearance in this configuration.

I wouldn't mind going to a +38mm offset for a little wider stance, but looking at the picture and looking under the fender, I think I'm going to be borderline rubbing with the tire poking about an additional 7 mm. I don't want to modify the car (i.e. roll the fenders if I can help it).

Is anyone racing a similar generation CRX or Civic with 15x7 wheels and 205/50R15 tires? Will the +38mm offset poke the tires out too much and cause rubbing, or should I stick with the +45mm offset as my current Civic Si rims have?

Oh, the front is lowered about 1.2" and the rear about 1" from stock. No camber adjustments.

Thanks for any help.

I hate to link to another forum to give you an answer, but this should be helpful: http://sccaforums.com/forums/thread/233522.aspx

To sum it up, basically the only person that had tried +38 on their CRX said it rubbed badly. Another person had run +38 successfully on their civic, but I assume the fenders are different.

Wider isn't necessarily better for autocross. It increases the total driving distance... which, in autocross, is more important than the marginal gains you'll get from a wider stance.

Thanks Justin,
I've been looking at forums and guides all over the place. There's another one I haven't seen yet, but you gave me the answer I'm looking for. I guess The Kosei +45 are the trick then.

Hey guys,
Just for interest, I did try the Kosei 15x7 on my CRX with a +45 mm offset and the wheels just barely rub against the rear trailing arm. Any suspension travel and the arms will start knaw'n at the aluminum. If you had 6.5" rims I think you'd be perfectly fine with a +45mm offset.

For a safe margin for autocross I'd recommend +40mm or smaller. I guess if I need to roll the fenders I'll have to. I want to stick with 15x7s since I'm running Kuhmo V710s. I might still be okay regarding the fenders though, my car is only lowered about 1 - 1.5" and I don't think I have enough remaining suspension travel to push the wheel up high enough.

I do have to recommend for racing though, the Kosei's are definately appealing. When I recieved them the finish was perfect and they were totally free from any visual defects. Light suckers too. They are hub-centric for a 56.1mm center bore, so no spacer rings are required. They do fit snug enough around the front hub that you need to rock the wheel back and forth several times to free it from the hub. So you have very little additional stress on the lugs.

Metric - that is a very nice looking Si you have there. Unfortunately mine isn't as good looking. Its function comes before its form. I originally purchased the car from a tech college student who was prepping it for drag racing. It's a CRX HF but has the Si motor and tranny in it. I had to redo the entire suspension on it, but the powertrain is top notch. The engine is bored out 0.002", it has oversized SRP pistons with Eagle 1 H rods. It has a D16XX VTEC crank and all the motor bearings are replaced. It's got a Gude camshaft with a modified ECU up to 8200 RPM. It's all held together with HPT bolts. The compression and timing is set for 93 octane. It's definately not a street car though. With the cam the engine is a pooch off of idle and the clutch has very little travel in it. So pulling away from a stop sign or a red light is almost like a drag launch. The engine really hits its powerband at 4000+ RPM.

I'm going to put it on a chassis dyno this summer to lean out the fuel mixture, so I don't know what the engine is putting out, but it really likes to move. I do have a friend that does SCCA track racing, and he dyno'd his Del Sol VTEC last year. I was with him and he got about 158 WHP out of it when they were done. He's driven my car, and he still says my car has more zip. So I'm interested to see what it will do.

For autocross handling is king though, and it's still set for that. The engine does help though. Last year in SM2 my main two competitors where two Miata MX5's. Besides their suspension tweaks, one is supercharged and the other is turbocharged. I was consistantly exchanging 1st and 2nd place in all the SM2 races last year (this was with RA1's), so the Miata's are definately fun to compete against. The Miata guys really don't like a little FWD Honda beating them though. Hopefully the Kuhmo's will give me enough stick this year for the front wheels though. I'm still consistantly breaking a front wheel loose if I hit the gas to hard leaving a turn, and the suspension is set to oversteer by default. I might have to get a LSD for it next year.
