Default How to tell b18c (jdm R) from b18c (jdm gsr)

Is there anyway to tell the difference? I bought a car with a b18c in it and the guy told me it was a b18c R and he showed me his track times and the best was a 14.8. It was his first time racing and he was a goofy kid so i'm not saying he's a pro drag racer, but I know they are rated at 200-210 at the flywheel. He had it dyno'd at 180-185 hp to the wheels with a whale ***** intake and aem cams and a few other mods in the head but the block is stock. 3in exhaust but stock manifold. It has what I believe is a type R intake manifold, I know for sure it's not a gsr manifold with the flower looking design, the ecu is chipped and vtec is set to kick at 4500 which it seems like is to early. Sometimes the wheels will break loose in first gear when vtec kicks but the car does pull pretty hard. (Also the motor is in a 93 si hatch with ls webs and stock body. I just removed the power steering motor yesterday because it was wire tied down but dissconected. Any help on telling the difference in the motors is appreciated!

the block u cannot tell the difference unless u open it up.

the head u can tell right away if u look by the vtec solenoid it would say 72 on it if it were a gsr.

So on the vtec solenoid if it does not say 72 anywhere on it it's a type r? Is it actually on the solenoid plastic cap or do I need to unbolt the solenoid? Does it have any number code if its a type r?

HUH?!

Look for either "P72" or "PR3" stamped on the front side of the head.

That will tell you which one it is.

P72 = GSR
PR3 = ITR

- Derek

P.S. On another note, if your ITR-swapped EG hatch is slower than 90% of GSR-swapped EG hatches, methinks you have a GSR.

Slower with his driving, an 18 year old that weights over 200lbs and first time at the track maybe, but I have yet to drive it at the track so we'll see, anyways thanks for the info ill check it out when I get off work + I don't think gsr motors dyno at over 180 to the wheels. But still ill check it out!

if it has this on your head, its a gsr head. if its says p30 its either a itr or b16a head

again, HUH?

D-Rob is talking about another stamp above the exhaust ports. pr3 will designate a b16 and itr head not p30.

My gsr says P72 on the bottom of the oil pan. Maybe look there. Could be a gsr block with a b16 head and ITR IM.

Look for green paint on the head by the distributor. Does the tranny have LSD.

Some more signs.

You could always do a compression test. ???
That would let you know real fast.

If it is a JDM GSR it's 10.6:1. If it is a JDM ITR, its 11.0:1.
(USDM specs are 10.1:1 GSR, 10.6:1 ITR, ***** and giggles)

I'd like to know how a compression test is going to express itself as a ratio.

Definately a PR3 head, you have the wrong throttle cable and or bracket however.. You are also missing the lower front torque mount also.

Why do you want to drop your vtec? If the guys who tuned your car knew what they were doing then it's probably set where it is for a reason.

Practice makes perfect, launches aren't the easiest thing to do.

I'm not sure but I heard it would smooth out the curve a little more...??

it's fine where it's at. if anything you might need to raise it a bit. only way to know is on a dyno.

Huh?!?! I ran a 14.5 with JDM SIR b16 IHE and chipped full interior....And bad launches...and as far as dropping vtec it doesnt do anything without the proper mods to complement the vtec lobe opening early there is a reason they have it where it is set..
