Default JDM S1 Tranny

I'm lookin at buying a JDM S1 Tranny off the B16 and putting it on a B18a. How would this setup do on the freeway? I do a lot of driving there right around 70 mph. I will eventually go to LS/VTEC, but that is a while down the line. Until then, is there anybody who has this setup that can shed some light onto the freeway issue. How do you like the tranny overall?

Thanks

Brian

I am at 4500 at 75 in mine. It blows on the highway. Fun as hell while ripping thru the gears through. I need a turbo and an ls tranny

So would a good suggestion be to go with a stock Ls tranny...[usdm s1]?

another thing i was wondering about is the JDM S1 has the exact same gearing as the Y21 ~ITR~ tranny. I would have thought that the ITR would have lower rpm's on the freeway. I suppose the higher redline helps a bit

http://tiiite.b16a.com/Bgears.htm check out the gearing on 'em

not for na. You will be slow as hell. The s1 is a good "geared" tranny for what you want but I have found that most people have problems with them.

yeah, goin 80 mph on the highway = 5000 rpm's in my car. I have a jdm j1 tranny, but its the same gearing as s1. In a b18 - yikes! I don't think it would be happy sitting at that rpm for extended amounts of time unless it is in pretty good shape internally. Would it be better for 1/4 mile and the such N/A, hell yeah. Just depends on how much freeway driving you do.

I heard the gearing on s1/j1 trannys are about the same as the ITR, but I think it has a longer 5th gear, so highway rpms aren't too bad. Plus the ITR has a higher redline than the b16, so sitting at 5000 on the highway wouldn't be too bad.

how does the S1 compair to other b16 cable trannys, like the Y1, performance wise. Do any of them have a better 5th gear for freeway driving?

The y1 or ys1 ? civic b16 tranny is better . 5th is longer.

There is no problem with using an S1 with a B16A. The B16A was meant to rev. But not a B18A/B18B. That motor is going to be hurting if you do much freeway driving with an S1 transmission. My recommendation is to stick with the B18A transmission. By the way, the S1 does NOT have the same gearing as the ITR transmission. The Y21 does. And if you are looking for a cable transmission, the B17A YS1 (not to be confused with the B18A YS1) also has the same gear ratios as the ITR transmission. But even this transmission is geared too short in fifth to work well on the freeway with a B18A/B18B.
