Well by knowing how VTEC works, you could better search your car for a problem. In order for the ECU to initiate the VTEC system, 5 engine conditions must be met.

Temperature: The engine must have reached normal operating temperature.

Throttle Position: The throttle must be open far enough to allow for increased airflow in VTEC.

Vehicle Speed: The car must be in motion (wheels spinning).

RPM: Engine must spin to it's target value. The GS-R will send it's "GO" signal for VTEC at 4400 RPM while the Type R sends it's signal at 5700 RPM.

Oil Pressure: The engine must be operating with normal and safe levels of oil pressure determined by the VTEC pressure switch.

The ECU will send a signal for a spool valve to open. When this valve opens, oil is allowed into the pivot shaft inside the valve rockers and directed into the center rocker. Inside the center rocker, a set of pins are forced outward by the oil pressure and lock inside the rockers to both sides. This entire process occurs in 1/10 of a second.

thanks for all the info but i pretty much new all that. doesnt the gsr have a primary and secondary vtec or something The GS-R will send it's "GO" signal for VTEC at 4400 RPM right than a secondary at 5500 rpm. not sure but thats what i thought and this is a si. they engine was fully warmed up and the throttle was open all the way because i was getting on it a little bit.

only the gsr has a vtec at 4400 and intake secondaries at 5800. the secondaries are not part of the vtec system.

what makes you think your vtec is cutting out?

So your car is falling out of vtec... that extremely weird. I've never heard of a car just randomly falling out of vtec while pulling through its powerban.

It sounds like oil pressure to me because if it was wiring one would assume vtec wouldnt enguage at all. Try checking the oil level again. My buddies si just did this over the weekend and we checked the oil and it didnt look low, but with the warming temps we figured it was a bit too thin ( we live in ND so we run 0w30 in winter) so we changed it to some 10w30 and it worked just fine. What weight did you put in when you changed your oil?

Well i've read on a couple of threads that fram filters tend to cause issues once in a while with oil pressure a search will confirm this ... thus the problem with your vtec. Id bet a buffalo nickle that that's your problem. I'd strongly suggest changing it out for an OEM honda filter. Its worth the few dollars.

oem honda filters have nothing to do with it.. you can use any filter.. but fram is crappy... k&m wix mobile 1... its all personal preferance really.. oem does not make a difference.. i actually hit this problem today... check your plugs to see if they are fouled

lololololololololol I can't believe Im reading this. lol you guys should have thought of this **** already man. CLEAN YOUR VTEC SOLENOID I'll let you know how.

1. unplug the vtec oil press. sensor and your vtec solenoid
2. Remove the 3 10mm bolts that hold on the solenoid on the head (make sure to have a rag ready.
3. remove the rubber gasket and screen
4. Clean that bitch cus I know its dirty as hell
5. take the top part of the solenoid off
6. now clean that screen too
7. put it all back together and call it a day. good luck and post back
