sohc zc non vtec is an a6 with a hotter cam, I'm not too sure on calis laws about just using a different motor code it being the same thing.
With a bit meaner cam it'll run a tad dirtier, and might not make smog.
Then again if it just being a jdm motor is enough yes it will fail.
UP for you and hopfully someone in cali will know better.

I know from expierence and sohc zc at a ref isnt gonna fly!!!!try and find a motor to swap in there or else your gonna get hit with a fine mate...sucks living here in the valley...but thats why I dont go to street races...for one cops are dicks and two its not worth my life...but we all learn from our mistakes and pray not your life....
yhe it should my bro's car passed smog and it had a dual camm zc in it all that matters is that all the conecters are plugged into the right sensors. but what year and what model is your car bcuz if the motor is older than your car your fuked bro. but if its newer than than the car than you should be ok just take off your intake and header and conect the breather hose and you should be ok you could find out the year of your motor by looking at the head it should say it in a little circle one side should say on number and the other side another number

the decision lies in the hands of the actual ref.
my teacher is the ref over at rio hondo college in whittier and he refs sohc zc's all the time.
he just wants everything to be done right before he looks at it

Yeah, I hooked everything up like the USDM a6's would be. All wiring was stock as my car is an Si...just don't give them any more work than needed and you'll pass, lol.

Yes! Michigan! The feeeeeling's forrreeeeverrrr . . .
^--- 80s Michigan travel ad jingle.
Anyway, there are many many benefits to living here in the Motor State. 94 octane @ the pump, zero emissions laws, seeing test mules and protos everywhere you go, NAIAS . . .
. . . you just have to dodge all the potholes and Mustangs.
Peace

Yes SOHC ZC (non-vtec) will pass as long as everything is hooked up right and you have your cat. Before the JDM craze, the ZC SOHC was being imported by K Watanabe Motors as a direct replacement japanese engine.
Anytime someone blew an a6, and purchased a "direct" replacement, 9/10 it was a ZC. Later as swaps (more specifically, illegal) became the thing, and importers began bringing in all sorts of motors, they started looking at the motors more closely.
An **** smog tech that knows his stuff may fail a car with a JDM engine designation stamped on the block, within his right if he doesn't want to take a chance getting busted, most wont care, wont know, if it looks like it's supposed to.
BAR ref's will pass a SOHC ZC as a direct replacement, as long as it is done right, and they are keenly aware, not everyone would rebuild a stock engine in a 89-91 car when they could drop in a replacement for about $400. There are provisions for direct replacements.
And as for stanislaus county, some places just think it is too much trouble, or don't care to go through the trouble of reffing imported motors properly, so they say no to it all. Go elsewhere.
Cheers

lol, some cops in ut harrass me but alot are kinda cool. Its about how you treat them. I had a cop pull me over for no front plate once. He wrote me a 'fix it' ticket then he started asking about the car. "Is it fast?" No. "Why is your battery in the trunk?" Cuz its JDM SON! "Why is the back gutted" I likes me them big girls, they gotta ride back there.
lol
My car at the time had a bad battery and I had been 'bump startig it'. Well I turned my car off after being pulled over and after the bsing and ticket was done I asked the cop for a jump. He said he couldnt becasue of the computer stuff in his car, so you know what happened? I stayed in the car while he pushed me a few hundred yards to bump start it. lol. Some cops here in ut are cool, most are not, its all how you treat them
To the op. Hopefully it passes. With my experience in emmissions, just make sure everythings as close to stock as possible or pay someone to pass it.
