my car is a 97 civic CX hatchback with an OBd1 jdm d15b swap. and as you guys know the stock d16y7 motor that my car came with the CAT is built into the header, and now i dont have a cat no more obviously. i recently bought a used cat from someone on HT for a 97 EX civic(the cats that go under the car) but NO muffler shops will install it they all say its illegal..so my question is should i buy another d16y7.. sell this cat and buy a BRAND NEW(EXPENSIVE) one.. or what? my plans with my car is either swappin a obd2 b18b or d16y8 into it sometime within a month or two

does it really matter if it's illegal? why do you need a cat?

if it's too loud then get a silencer kit, then get illegal inspections to take care of emissions.

cops will never know you're running without the cat as long as you're not running really loud.

 

Or, perhaps, put it on yourself?

 

why not just install the cat yourself? 2 bolts connect to the pipe from the header, 2 bolts connect to the catback. get youself gaskets and bam installed. i did mine myself in the summer on the DA

 

by a catco catylic converter, there 100% legal, not sure if they make 1 tho for
jdm d15, you might have to do a little fabricating

 

becuhz.. by havin the original cat on the header, id have to CUT my exhaust piping and weld the clinges together first then i would be able to bolt on the cat.. and i dunno anybody with a welder..

 

go to shops that weld and ****

and offer a dude who seems chill side job b4 he gets outta work ask him to weld it to your new cut flanges and fitment

==offer him like 20.00+12 pack, i did this on my dirt bike i had my fmf exhaust from cr250 welded onto my cr85 and only cost me 20.00!

if you're going to do a swap soon.. might as well do it all together.. and make sure you don't do anything stupid that would cause you to be pulled over.

swap the whole exhaust and be done with it. You might have to add some length to the O2 sensor wires, but i should work, no?

 

swap it to what exhaust.. i just bought the apexi wolrd sport 2 catback thats made for 96-00 hatchback and the piping all bolts straight up to the header becuhz for a stock 96-00 cx/dx the cat is supposd to be built into the header and not under the car so theres no extra gap between header and pipings to fit a cat.

Actually MA and CA are both equally as bad. They are the only two PZEV states afaik.

But if you can get an illegal inspection sticker for double the price of a legal one, then why not?

It's cheaper than buying a new cat or whatever else this guy wants to do.

 

yea i can.. its jus that i dont wanna worry bout state ref and all taht bullshit with the san diego cops and MA and CA is not equal.. from what i know and hear from EVERYONE. CA is 10x worst than all other states when it comes to import scene/racin/thieves

i am plannin on swappin to an obd2 soon.. its becuhz my original motor blew and i had no money no job and im still in highschool so my homie jus swappd in his extra obd1 d15b into my car so i can go to schoo and get around as a daily driver. and now i have a part time job kinda so im savin up for a motor.. and this whole thread was bout me wanting to put a cat on..

Thats a solid bro doin that for you. The only reason i questioned it is because backdating engines is also illegal but hey man you gotta get to school somehow. Id sell the used cat and get a new one just so u know its gonna work.
