Default HF trans question

The car is a 90 hatch. I replaced my DX transmission with a temporary HF transmission. I'm looking to buy a clutch for it now but I have some questions before buying one. When we put the HF transmission on, it just wouldnt go on because the DX clutch was smaller.. the shaft wouldn't fit through the hole in the clutch. 90-91 clutches for the DX,Si, and HF are all the same, correct?

I'm trying to find out what cheap clutch to buy for this HF so I can get the car moving again until I get the Si tranny in in a few weeks. I just don't know the year of the transmission. I don't want to buy one from ebay, it be the wrong one, then not be able to replace it.

I'm not sure of the year.. I'm trying to find out what year it is so I can purchase a clutch for it. The car is a 90 hatch and the transmission didn't work with the 90 DX clutch..

88 trannys special
89-91 trannys are all the same.
90-91 flywheels are the same
88 flywheels are special
89 flywheels are special

im not 100% sure about the above, but im about 90%. do a quick search to double check.

so if im correct, if you have a 1990 civic, use your old DX flywheel, and clutch, and slide the tranny on. i dont see what could go wrong!

UNLESS... DUN DUN DUN
if you got sold an 88 tranny, with 21 splines instead of 20, you are fuckd.

there are two diffrent clutches for all the dseries there are a 20 spline and a 21 spline the 88crx is a 21 spline and the 90 and up to 2000 is a 20. thats how many teeth on the shaft. of the tranny make sure you have the right one.

and dont put a light fly wheel. I will not give you enough torque to get over 90 mph
not good. use the stock one.

I'm guessing I have a 21 spline count because the HF transmission would not work with the DX clutch. It was to big, wouldn't fit into the clutch.

This helps me out alot .. I can now order a clutch for the car.

also ... i heard that with boost an HF tranny is faster then an Si transmission. I could see that being true with high HP cars but what about a 180-200hp car?

The HF tranny is primarily used for Fuel Economy. It by far has the longest set of gearing. I don't think the HF tranny would hold up. Shorter gearing > longer gears IMO. You may not have huge top end, but you get there quick. You can always get the best of both worlds, Si tranny with an HF Final gearing heh. Ultimate 1-4 gearing with great highway.

'88 - 190mm flywheel, 21 spline input shaft
'89 - 200mm flywheel, 20 spline input shaft
'90-'91, 212 mm flywheel, 20 spline input shaft

if you use a '90+ flywheel in an '89 car, you can use the '90+ 212mm clutch

this is all confusing me.. I have a 90 DX .. with an HF transmission. After this thread it appears that it is an 88 transmission since it didnt work with my stock DX clutch.

the HF transmission is only temporary so I can get the car on the road until I can find a good Si transmission in my area. I need to know what clutch I need for it tho so I can order a cheap one ASAP to hold me over for a few weeks til I get the Si.

Only way to tell for sure is count the splines on the transmission, then go from there.

Just wondering if you have an HF tranny why is your signature looking to buy another?

Also an HF is a 5-speed...if you didn't really already know that.

count the splines on the transmission input shaft - if it is 21, then the transmission is 88 - unless, someone changed it, your 90 DX has a flywheel and pressure plate for a 212mm diamter clutch - in this case, buy a clutch disc for 88 Accord which is 212mm diameter and fits 21 spline 7/8" input shaft of the 88 transmission

Quick year identification for D-series transmisisons:

Count the number of rings around the tip of the Input (Main) Shaft

http://www.crxcommunity.com/im...5.jpg

0 = 88
1 = 89
2 = 90,91
