Default Better location for mid-bass or component driver?

Trying to see what options I have for the Turbo Pig - my new (to me) '99 Volvo S70 T5...

Basics - double-DIN head unit with CD and cassette, eight speakers (2 dash, 2 front door, 2 rear door, 2 package shelf). Not sure about any factory amps or anything like that. Might just be the head unit powering everything.

I'm thinking about replacing the stock head unit to make room for gauges. That, and it seems to lose radio reception around town. Ah well. Bass response is fine with rap stuff, but gets muddy with normal "rock" stuff. Very odd. Poor adjustability, too.

But to the question at hand - being that I have a few factory mount locations to choose from - which would be the better place for a mid-bass or component woofer? Rear deck (package shelf) or rear door? Both can take a 6.5" driver - not sure of mounting depth...

Also, would factory speaker wiring be ok for mid-power speakers (not looking to break the bank), or should I count on replacing all that stuff?

I would say door... I don't know if that bass made by a 6.5" will be enough to be substantially heard in the cabin if they are put in the trunk. Or is this a wagon? In which case, stick them in the far back.

And I wouldn't get a component woofer b/c then you are mixing in the highs of the tweeter back there. Save up for components up front. Thats where you will be able to hear the difference.

Factory wiring will suffice so long as you don't start to add amps in which case it would be wise to change to a thicker wire.

Hope that helps.

Thanks! Still haven't decided if I'm going to upgrade. The stock stuff is pretty stout already. I was just thinking of places to put a boost gauge, and going from double-din to single-din would make plenty of room

Besides, I still haven't found out if it has factory amps or not - no one seems to know...
