Default shift lock release problem and break lights

i have an auto 95 coupe and for some reason when i press the break to move the shifter out of park it does not work the shifter is stuck the only way i can get it out is by sticking a key in the shift lock keyhole and putting my car in neutral then start it up HOWEVER when i do this my break light dont work are they connected somehow? this has been going off and on for about 4 months but now it wont go away and my break lights wont work even when the rare occurence trhat my shifter acts normally.

thanks

Yes, they are connected. There's a switch mounted near the pivot of the brake pedal. It triggers the brake lights, and it also tells the shift-lock system to release the shift lever.

Look for a broken switch, a bent bracket, a busted wire, or something wrong down at that switch.
