while changing fuel pumps yesterday i found the wire sheath was ripped, so i replaced it with just some regular wire i had lying around.
can i use just normal wire 16ga that i got from like autozone in my fuel tank, or will the gas mess with the plastic sheath on it exposing the wire?

The gas might eat the sheathing of the wire. Electric supply houses carry stranded wire that is labeled gas and chemical resistant.
I just did my fuel pump, and I was looking at the wires as well, wondering what they're made of. To be honest, I really dont think that the wire is any different. I'm not even sure that the wires come in contact with fuel at any time. Think of it this way; if the plug were dipped into the fuel, what would happen?
The pump would short and cause a spark, and that would be your demise...
