question for all you guys who have actually seen or checked out the old timing belt that came out as part of your timing belt replacment service -
What point (miles) did you replace it ? and how did it look at that point ? Did it look like you got lucky?! or did it look like it could easily take another 10k miles?!

I know the "recommended" is 90k miles for my car, but is going over it by 4-5k miles really pushing it ? Will it be ok to do it a little bit later ?
Seeking some real world practical wisdom from those of you who've been there, done that!

 

you can inspect your timing belt by removing the valve cover, it's just like inspecting any other belt, if it's cracked, worn, etc then replace it.

I've never pushed the limits though, and I never got a chance to look at my last timing belt, I just wanted to let you know how you can inspect it if you had the chance prior to replacment.

Interference motors are dangerous to push timing belt replacement too far...

So, don't push it...

 

your best not to push it because if it breaks in worse off then you would have been if you would have just replaced it.

yes I know it is not worth the risk, I just want to find out what condition in fact timing belts are really in when replaced at 90-100k.

 

Sometimes they look really good. TB on my former Integra GSR had no cracking when I replaced it at about 100k miles. Sometimes the cracks form a few days before the teeth begin shearing off. I bet if you never replace it it might just last 150k miles. Or maybe 91k miles. Do ya feel lucky?? Are you willing to inspect it EVERY day?

 

f23's the replacement went to 110 or 115k. thats what the honda mechanic told me

 

both my accords I did at like 120,000 90 is just a safe #. BTW you need to turn the belt inside out to inpect for cracks on the tooth of the belt not the outer edge like others have suggested!!!

 

Let's put it this way- I had a top end rebuild done on my 98 Cl with 104,xxx miles on it. They didn't offer to replace the timing belt, which is recommended at 105,000. Needless to say, at 110,000 miles I snapped the belt going up a big hill, and now am still trying to work out problems on a new crate motor- $3,300 later and counting So- word to the wise.... replace the belt.

 

It seems after 100k miles, you get into the danger zone. I haven't heard of any breaking before 100k, but have heard of many breaking before 120k. If your over 100k, your engine is living on borrowed time.

 

i changed mine around 90k. just incase. then we i did my h22 swap, i got the belt changed on that one as well. i didn't even wanna push it. the thing in question if your not the orginal owner, is what was all changed before the car got to you.

 

i got 187k miles on my accord and never replaced

 

When HONDA says that it needs to be done. anything else is borrowed time and if that thing snaps, it will suck to be you.

94-97 cars were 90K, replacement belts since 2000 are 105K

ALL 98-02 accords are 105K I4 or V6 (dealer may tell you 120K but if it snaps after 105K Honda will NOT offer any assistance)

03+ K series use a chain and V6 are 120K? (I don't know for this model V6)

 

IME the seals give in before the belt normally and if you're doing the seals, you might as well do the belt and everything else at the same time.

 

replace it according to the car's owner's manual and you will be fine...replacing the timing belt is better than getting the entire valvetrain overhauled

 

i have 120k on mine and i hate knowing that. i want to change it so bad but its still so cold out. so i just take it easy when i can.

 

Load doesn't put a strain on the timing belt, its a timing belt not a drive belt . High rpms do put a strain on it though increase the chances of breaking.

 

like i said, thats why i take it easy.

 

good Idea. until you have the money or time just try not to think about it.
