cooling problems
Okay, I am in the final stages of finishing my civic. Right now I am working on the cooling. I have bought a new OEM replacment radiator, a working fan from the junkyard. So I figured I am ready to go. Well, I plug the fan in, let the car idle, and it will overheat because the fan does not kick on. If I manually hook the fan up to the battery, and turn it on that way. It cools just fine. So, is anyone familiar with how this works, or what I can check? I have a haynes manual, which worthless, and doesnt show, or say anything.
Its a 90' Si btw.
Thanks.

There is a thermoswitch on the back side of the block, above and to the left of the oil filter, roughly the 11 o'clock position. That switch should go to ground when the engine gets hot enough and turn on the fan. There is also a relay involved. I would think it's one of the two on the right fender wall behind the headlight.
Cool, so there is a relay. I think those relays need to be grounded also, or at least the headlight ones did. I will try and bolt that down tonight and see if that works.
Thanks

Unplug the two wires that go to the thermosensor and jump them together with a peice of wire and also jump that wire to a good ground just to be sure your grounded. If the fan goes on, its the sensor, if not, its the relay or your not getting power to the relay.
