To Hood Pin or Not to Hood Pin
I'm getting a lot of beef for wanting to put these hood pins on my Carbon Fiber hood that I'm getting this week.

My friends keep telling me hood pins are rice and everything like that and I agree to an extent. I'm not a fan of hood pins at all, but if it stops me from having the hood pop up from the wind and smash into my windshield, I'm all for them. I already have the pins, I'm just waiting for the hood to arrive. Do you think I really need them? Is it just a waist of money and fugly? Opinions.

I think the hood latch is enough to keep your hood from popping up in to your windshield. But if your deadbent on getting hood pins, try getting the flush mount hoodpins. I think they look a lot better.
Oh BTW do you still have those rims that were on the LX? Are you gonna put them on your Si?
See you on the 17th

Tell you friends to die in a fire.
Especially if its those parking lot pimpers... that do burnouts at Best Buy and sweat neon green stock wheels.
Personally.. I'm not a fan... it makes the front end very busy..& i was never really a CF hood fan (except MAYBE black) due to people in the "scene" not knowing why you have a black hood on a colored car...
ANYhow...

Thats just a random pic i found from searching... of a hood that flew up
I've had friends hoods fly up on the highway... NOT a pretty site & luckily..nothing happened.

I had a carbon fiber hood on my DA for a couple years and never had a problem with it flying up. The latch is definately good enough. If the latch breaks, that company would be getting a call. Anyways, I dont think its necessary.
i installed many back in high school on various muscle cars and pickups. make sure you get some that are guaranteed not to rust. even the chrome plated ones will develop some type of rust over time.
i never found a set of locking hood pins that were stainless steel, but never really looked too hard either.
i like the look of hood pins, but i also think you have to have some serious hp under the hood to use them, i know many would disagree, but that's just my opinion.
....on the other hand to contradict myself when my 98 hatchback was stolen, all they did was snip the + wire on the siren under the hood to buy them some time. my d16 was stock, but my headlights, type r guages, rotas, stereo, woofer, coilovers, camberkit, shift ****,and seats were gone when they recovered it.... wish i would have had some locking hoodpins on that, might have made it just a bit harder for them to take my hatch. :0(

Had a buddy who had a CF hood on his eg hatch. While driving on the hwy it flew open and destroyed his windshield and part of his roof
Don't risk it man put some pins on your hood.

Hood pins are worth it if you can stand the odd look and nasty comments.
My hood flew off going 85 on a freeway once. Popped once, obscured my view, before i could even finish say: "oh..fff...." It snapped off, and next thing ya know, its doing 360's in my rearview mirror, 20 feet in the air. Noone got hurt luckily.
Then to my sadness, many cars ran it over.
In the end, the hood was actually ok. Bunch of tire marks and a little scratched at the sides/corners. After further inspection, i guess it slapped the top of my car and cracked the moonroof.
CF proved its worthiness to me that day.
(Just make sure it stays on your front end, where it belongs)

From a cosmetic point of view, I agree with Type X, they can look tacky and ruin the "flow" (for a lack of a better term) of the appearance. But from a safety stand point - think of them like a seatbelt, damn uncomfortable but well worth it when they're put to the test.
It's not a bad set you have linked up right now anyway, so squash your friends comments and be safe.

I've never literally thought about what it would be like to experience the hood flying up while you're driving, especially at elevated highway speeds, that would be damn terrifying.
That cracked pic above alone is enough to sell me on some "unsightly" pins! Hot damn.

ROFL, I had to look twice, but it is water. As for the hood pins, ABSOFREAKINGLUTELY, IMO they are an absolute necessity when using a CF hood. Even the ones with a reinforced stock mounting latch have a unnerving tendency to come undone and cause lots of damage. Not running pins is taunting Darwin and that dude is a badass, I wouldn't mess with him.
Jon
PS: Pins or not, CF hoods are a liability in a crash, they don't fold like the stock hood, but generally detach from the rear mounts and penetrate the passenger compartment. I have seen the results at the hospital I work at and it can be a bit gruesome.

The point we are trying to make is, although we would like to think that latch is enough(and most of the time it is) it CAN fail, and if it does, the results could range from banging up your own car, it flying off into traffic, etc.
Hood pins reduce that potential. It does not eliminate it, but its a hell of a lot safer than using the stock latch.
