Oval muffler - Quiet?
I am getting a new muffler for my GSR. Right now I have a Holly Thundermuff and it is too loud and the tip is too big. I also have a resonator. I have been thinking about a 2.5 strait through oval muffler like the vibrant all black streetpower. I have done a lot of searching about this muffler but everyone seems to have different opinions about it. Some say it is loud and some say it is quiet. I have also heard that the ES and Magnaflow oval mufflers are pretty quiet. Does anyone know anything about any of these mufflers or have any other suggestions? Thanks!
The thunder muffler is chambered isn't it? If so, chances are it will be quieter than a straight-through muffler of any variety. Straight through mufflers seem to provide little in the way of mufflication.
I don't think it is chambered. I just looked at it and I can see all the way through the tip and the muffler to the piping behind it. It does have lots of bumps in the piping on the inside of the muffler. Does that mean its chambered? I thought chambered meant that the exhaust went through different chambers that muffled the sound but I am not sure. Thanks for your reply.
Just got a vibrant muffler 2 weeks ago and had it put on. Its a 3". A lot quieter and less noticeable than the canister muffler I had, but still louder than stock. My wife used to know when I got home cause she could here my exhaust down the street, now she doesn't even hear me when I pull up. I like it a lot better than the canister. I've heard some magnaflows and they had that lawnmower sound. The vibrant has a nice deep tone. I say get it. If you want, I'll try and put a clip of my exhaust when I get home.

You are correct. If you were to look at a cutaway of a chambered muffler (Flowmaster for example) you would clearly see chambers in the muffler shell. I am not too familiar with Holly mufflers, I simply guessed that it may be chambered. My apologies.

RS-R exmag is very quiet as well, as are Greddy Sp-2. I have an SP-2 on my DB8, and was amazed at how quiet it was (I say was, as it has been installed for over 3 years, and has since gained some volume).
A clip would be great!!! Ya I think I am starting to bother the neighbors with my exhaust. Would 2.5 be even quieter than 3? Thanks a lot.

Yes.
Unless you are producing over 250whp, 3" exhaust piping is pretty large.

I have a magnaflow oval straight thru design muffler. I am using 2" piping with no cat but two resonators. The tone is decent, no rasp, but still too loud for me. At first, the sound level was fine I thought. But over time, the Magnaflow gets louder as the sound absorbing material breaks down. I noticed a performance gain over stock, but most of that was due to the stock cat's brick breaking up and obstructing flow.
My next exhaust set up will be 2 1/2" mandrel bent piping, Magnaflow maximum length resonators, and chambered (Apexi WS2) or a twin loop muffler, but no more straight thru mufflers for me. I guess you could consider a twin loop straight thru, just straight thru twice.

ive heard that flowmaster mufflers on tegs sound pretty good and doesnt sound like a fart can, they are kinda quiet to
go with chambered muffler if looking for a quieter exhaust
check t-i they have a exhaust purchasing guide with sound clips and specs
