Default B_Rex's Build ...Full wire tuck, engine bay shave, cage, interior and 2.0 LS ***NO 56k***

I have thought about doing one of these build threads for awhile just to document everything I do on one of my cars. But this one will take the cake.

I picked up a 88 DX CRX yesterday for a killer price.

It already has new ES bushings front to back, newer front and rear sway bars, stainless steel brake lines, rear disc's, kyb agx struts, h&r springs, JDM gauge cluster and MOMO steering wheel hub. And it has minimal rust for a Utah car. Only thing wrong with the car is that it had the b16 in it stolen.

I plan on changing the color of the car (correctly) which means I will have to strip the entire car down. I also want to do a full wire tuck, engine bay shave, 8pt Cage, ksport suspension, fully built sleeved 2.0 Turbo'd LS and corbeau seats/harness' along with black interior.

And oh yeah, I wanna get all this done by Cinco de Mayo. The first race of the season at my local (2 hour drive away....lol) track.

First off I don't have a great big shop or garage. So I went and rented a 10'x20' storage shed on the edge of town. And I bought me a new generator to run my compressor, lights, welder etc etc

But anyway, I went to pick up the car yesterday. Dropped it off at the shed and returned to work on it a few hours later. I was so excitied to start this build. So I wend to start up my generator to start the heater and get some lighting. Low and behold my ****** new $600 generator wouldn't run. I messed with it for 3 freaking hours. I Finally got so f***ing pissed, I just went home.

So I woke up today and had to run a few errands. After I ran my errands I went home to read any info I could find on my new generator. After reading for awhile I decided to go try to see if I could get it to work. I get there and waste another hour and a half messing with the damn thing. I ended up just giving up and decided to just do what I could while I still had sunlight.

Anyway, enough with that story, on to the pics

This is what the car first looked like;

After about 4 hours of working on it, I got off all the suspension. Interior from seats back, front bumper and lights off. Undid all the clips holding the harness in the engine bay and removed rear lights.

Let me be the first to say, thats one minty interior and one rust free car from a state made entirely of salt.

It does have alittle bit of rust but not nearly even 10% of my other rex. The guy I bought it from moved up here from arizona and you could tell he kept really good care of it. Thanks again James

Well today I drove down to SLC. Which is a 2 hour drive with good traffic to get another generator. And it took my 3 and a half hours to get back because I got stuck in rush hour.
So I finally got my new generator back to my storage shed. Put in a gallon of gas and filled the oil and I tried to start it up. It wouldn't even fire.....WTF!!! After about 3 hours of messing with it I was about ready to just give up the whole damn buying a generator thing and just rent one when I need one. Right before I decided to give up I told my friend to hold up the back end of it while I pulled the starter. Low and behold the damn thing fires right up.....WTF!!! All that messing with it and that's all we had to do?!?!?
Anyway, we got the generator working and we hooked up the heater, lights and of course stereo. After we finally got going we got alot done. I wanted to post up pics but all my online storage is full. Does anyone know how I can resize my pics so that they take up less memory? If you can help my out I will get new pics up.

thanks for the heads up, worked like a charm.

I know everything is a mess. I usually dont keep my stuff like that but with the limited space available the main objective has been just to strip everything down as quick as possible. I have only put in about 8 hours to get it to this point. I think I'm making pretty good progress thanks to my friend helping me with a few things last night. But the body work will soon begin and progress will slow to a crawl ....lol

thank you

I had to baby sit tonite and helped my friend change his axle so I didn't get a chance to work on her tonite. But I hope to have the engine bay ready to be welded and the rest of the interior out tomorrow.

I got the rest of the heater components and the carpet out. Removed the rest of the interior. Got the doors and hood off. And I got alot of grinding and seam sealer removed.

After grinding on the firewall for about a hour and a half. I have made a change of plans. I have always loved the look of a shaved engine bay but it has always bothered me that no one has ever filled in or welded the groves in the firewall. So I came up with the idea, on the way home, that I am going to get me a piece of sheet metal tomorrow and weld a whole piece over the fire wall. I think it will help everything look ten times better.

And if you have any input about my firewall idea please feel free to comment. The only thing I'm worried about is NHRA rules about modifing the firewall even thou I plan on retaining the stock firewall because I plan on running low 11's to high 10's this year.

Anyway, on to the pics of the progress.

well, you said it. I dont think it is worth the work myself. I believe it will look good, but not that good. If ya know what I am saying here. pretty much, if you dont mind the work, then hell ya, you will have a pretty unique bay then! My lazy **** just wouldnt do it. props for what looks to be a killer build thread in the future, I am SUBSCRIBED!

I saw that crx on craigs list and Almost called him to buy it and cut it up for random things i needed for my car and my roomates. like a roof and a door and a 1/4 pannel.

So you really saved it by buying it.

good luck with your build.

looks like fun.
and about the firewall, I would be afraid of loosing precious engine bay space. probly wont be a problem, but working on it is hard enough.
just my .2 cents

Well, I got a bunch done. BUT you can't really tell....lol. I welded most of the holes. Grinded them down and started to weld my sheet metal over the firewall. I think its going to come out pretty good once I get it done. But I ran out of gas for my welder and prolly won't be able to get a refill till monday

I went down to pick up some metal glaze today. But the guy I spoke to recommend that I try this new bondo brand "Glaze and spot putty." Has anyone ever used it. I tried it out and it seems just like bondo. I'm wondering if I should just get the metal glaze.

Not trying to be a parts "snob" but I see your using a "parts plus" water pump?! If you wanna return that and then use that money to buy a Honda/Acura water pump I'd be more than willing to help you out! I work for Honda and I'd rather see you use OEM stuff!
