i can shift into every gear except 3rd good. I have a civic hatch with b16.

when i shift into 3rd it grinds real bad and sometimes i can get it in if i hold the shift **** real hard into 3rd until im actually moving in that gear. however that might work once and a while it still is random and rare to get it more than 2 times in a row.

also sometimes when im driving in 3rd and let go of the gas long enough or barely tap the gas then it will pop out of 3rd.

what is wrong? tranny shift ****? shifter?

I was told it was the shift linkage is that true?

 

could it be the forks maybe? or the sinkros? I don't have the same problem but i want to know too.

 

that **** suks man i kno wat u going threw i would also like to kno how u fix it because i got same problem but with reverse it wont go in i rather not drive then not have reverse

 

if i dont hold my shifter into 4th it comes out. then u hear a grinding. it sucks.

 

ya the guy i bought it from said it might be the forks...or something about it not reaching the whole way.

sounds like same exact thing as me. everytime i drive it sounds like i dont know how to shift but i cant get it everytime. is it bad to consently go from 2nd to 4th?

what sucks is 2 of my friends have b series shift linkage and one doesn't even run yet and the other is driven rarely! oh well ill make them let me borrow it this weekend so i can find out for sure if its the shift linkage or something else...

anyone have suggestions? or help? thanks all

 

It sounds to me like the dreded 3rd gear syncro problem. From my experiences this problem is common among many of D & B seires trannys that have been abused.

Your best bet to getting it in gear is learning how to rev match. Doing that will only extend your transmissions life marginaly. You should expect to replace or have that tranny repaired in the near future. Your description makes me think sooner rather then later

 

rev match? no matter what rpm i seem to be at doesn't really seem to be the issue. i've tried at low rpms and higher. however at the same token i've been trying my best to find out what works but what works one time doesnt seem to work everytime which is the prob or i would jus repeat the same process

the best way i could describe it, it feels like when i put it into 3rd it never really engages the 3rd gear and its really hard to tell when i do actually get it in. then if i hold it in 3rd but doesnt "catch" it grinds like if i never had it in 3rd EVEN tho im still holding the **** in 3rd.

I think its a bearing.

 

i have b series shift linkage and it doesnt help. lol get a new tranny its gunna be your best bet!!!!

 

u have b series shift linkage...but that doesnt mean that cant be the prob no? is the tranny is good but the shift linkage wont put it in gear what good is a new tranny with same shift linkage?

i guess im just hoping its not that sorry if i sounded rude but i dont feel like putting more money on my dd when i have another project to think about and spend money on...

 

i HAD the cut and welded linkage. then i got the hasport.. dont get me wrong. its alot smoother but still grinds. your sinkros are going out. that or your outa tranny fluid. but im sure u checked that.

 

is fixing a syncro expensive? or is it just better to buy new tranny?

also is this 3rd gear syncro a common thing with b16 trannys? or honda trannys? only reason i ask is cuz most of my friends have hondas and currently the b16 is wat i've been around with the most. and none of them had this before or now. 4 of my closest friends all have b16s in 4 gen cars lol

the third gear thing is very common for b and d series.. I have lost one tranny to that bastard third gear.
