i already have a proffessionaly installed pioneer 6400 in my car and the cd player stopped working

i'm wondering if i can just take it out, buy a new cd player (same or diff brand) and slide it in, would it clip into the same harness?

 

Same brand, probably. But no, they are not all standard between brands.

You will also need to change out the mounting cage if you buy a different brand.

 

so each brand requires a different mounting cage?

and they all have different plugs in the back of their units?

The deck should come with its own harness. This plugs into the deck and has loose wires. Then you need to get a car specific harness that will plug into the car. Then you connect the deck and car specific harnesses together. If you pull out your current deck, you will need to cut off the car specific harness and connect it to the new deck's harness.

 

actually same brand doesn't mean the same plug either.

I think pioneer is one of the companies that goes crazy and changes their plugs to a different one every new model year...
