The additional power is not the only upgrade over the base TL. The Type S gives you factory body kit, the gun metal wheels, stiffer suspension, better looking tail lights, navigation standard, Type S two tone seats, and noise cancelling cabin. You also can not get a manual transmission with the base model.
I recently picked up a 2007 TL Type S and it is an amazing car. This car is nearly as much fun to drive as the Integra Type R's that I have had. I'm currently rebuilding another Type R right now and wondering why I need to now.
Also, once you add the Navigation to the base TL it is only a $2000 upgrade to go tp the Type S.

Hmm, I am in the same position, sort of.
My 2001 PY R was stolen last week and just recovered...gutted. The insurance people are optimistic, but I doubt it will be worth it to fix the car, especially with OEM parts.
Any opinions on what the out the door price would be on a TL-S?
Also, is the navigation really worth it? I always feel like you can get a non-factory system that is 10x better a year later and costs about $500 or so.

the factory gps is much better imho. helps you not just with directions by with finding resturaunts, diners, banks, atms, etc.
ad all the extras a TL-S has on a base TL and it'll be worth lots more than the $5000 upgrade. the navi is $3000 give/take alone

I have a 02 type s and it still amazes me. I love it. No one thinks that this car can handle its own. I love blowing past you civic, integra guys! LOL! Really, it all depends on what you want. There are times I wish I had my gsr back, but im older now and like the tl-s cause its more refined.

I don't have anything bad to say about the TL-S. However, it's at about the max you can do with that sized FF car, and there are occasions that you realise that it's maxxed out. Sometimes, despite the suspension and Torsen axle, you just have a little trouble putting all that power down in a corner.
The only thing I can think of that you might miss is the ease with which you were working on your other cars. You're not going to want to fool with a TL-S the same way, and there are far, far fewer performance parts available for the J motors.
