TAKATA 4pt Racing harnesses - Opinion thread
Ok, I want to know what everyone thinks/feels about the Takata racing harnesses for use with daily driven vehicles and competition. I want to know who's used it and their experiences in aesthetics (how it looks), comfort and safety, fitment, etc, etc... POST PICS!
Also, EF peeps who've used this, I encourage you to post up info and pictures!
This thread open only for the 4pt harness for cars with rear seats, not the 2pt harnesses for cars equipped with rollcages!
I know they run steep at $400.00/ea., but who cares about money, the issue at hand is whether they do the job or not!
Post awayyyyyyyyy!!!

Takatas got the bling factor. But...
A) you should never wear anything but your factory seatbelt on the road (aftermarket belts do not have tensioners and are more likely to break your neck then save your life)
B) Simpson, Impact, G-force or Crow makes the pretty much the same damn thing (I don't care what the JDM nuts say, FIA spec is great, but SFI isn't inferior by any means of the word) for about 1/4 to 1/5 of the cost of a Takata.
But, if money ain't a thing...go for it.

Takata is bling bling! its kinda like the mugen strut bars, or the radiator cap.. or spoon calipers that drop like a pound of stock, you can say you got it but you can get cheaper that do exactly the same

Although I do agree that the Takatas are a show piece and other brands are well up to par or atleast close... but the green ... whew.
SmrCRX: What do you mean as long as they dont sit below the shoulder? Bad experience? Gotta have good seats for these? Are shoulder cushions a must?
I need replacements as my stock ones are welded and scare the **** outta me.

He means the rear straps must be attached to a harness bar or a other suitable mounting location that is shoulder lever or higher. They should not be mounted "pimp my ride" style and run down the back of the seat, severe spinal compression can result
and the 4 points are just bling you need the 5th point to keep the belts down and in place

Couldn't have said it better myself
Theres a really good article in an SCC issue about 6 or 7 months ago... they talked about how roll cages and other things do make your car safer, but 90% of the time it makes it more dangerous then without due to the absence of a helmet on street drivers. That should provide alot of light on your situation. I'd talk to the hard parkers about Takatas comfort wise ( I can't speak from experience ) but the Simpson Platinum or NASCAR belts as they call em are really nice, super smooth fabic, easy latches and cam locks, etc etc.

If you are absolutely set on running harnesses on the street, at least do safety upgrades together.
Use a rollbar with a harness bar, and use either a good quality reclining seat (that won't collapse easily, Sparco, Momo, recaro, etc)with the proper harness holes (to keep them placed on your body right) or a fixed back bucket that also has the right holes to keep the lap belt over your hip bone.
Last but not least use a DOT approved harness. Schroth makes a DOT approved harness for street and track. How is this one legal you may ask? Two things:
One it has ASR (anti submarine) technology that simply put is extra length of belt on the inboard side (these are made in sets for left and right) that will elongate in an accident allowing your body to flex a little to keep you from going under the lap belt and squishing your guts into your chest, before pulling you back into an upright position.
Second and MOST important, the latch is a plain buckle with a bright red release button that says press to release. Why is that important? Well when an EMT show up at the scene of an accident, you can't assume he's a car guy and has done duty at a track - HE MAY NOT KNOW HOW TO GET YOU OUT OF YOUR HARNESS. Time spent cutting the belt out of the way, is time spent not saving your life.
These two reasons make the Scroth harness street and DOT legal.
I've done some reading and spoken to quite a few people regarding this. I am doing a similar set-up and thought I should share.

Well, I have to upgrade as my stock belts I do not trust.
Humm... things to think about. Thanks for the input guys!
RSZero1: I'm guessing those Scroth belts can replace the stock belts?
Links people, post links!

Do you think this guy deserves Takatas?

i think they are cool and everything but for a car that isnt tracked or anything its kinda pointless. if its just a street car it seems like its more for a M4D TYTE JDM bling factor. they look sick in about anything but they are a little too pricey for me.

Verification of this? I'd love to drive to the nearest dealership and have them fix my belts for me - they don't retract like they're supposed to anymore!

Read some studies on 4 pt belts and you will not put them in. 4pt belts are know to have major safety flaws as you slide forward because of no sub. belt (talked about earlier in this thread) the belts move up and start crushing your chest. Just FYI.
I rode in a car around town with the Takata belts and I felt like the biggest JDM fairy around. I quickly got out of the car when it stopped.

Yes Scroth above. And Yes a fixed back does help, just because there is a way to make sure the belt stays over your hips like seen.

That roll bar really should be padded at the very least. You're cruising for a massive head injury...
