Default gsr cable tranny in crx, no speedometer

I can pull the mechanical (cable) VSS out, put the speedometer cable in it and spin it with a drill and my speedometer works. Put it back in the tranny and no speedometer. You can feel the vss slide into place so I think its lined up. You can spin the wheels with the vss out, the frontend jacked up and the car in gear and you can't see or feel anything moving to drive the cable. Is this something broken inside the tranny that can easily be replaced/repaired?

Are you sure you put the calbe in ALL the way? Does the little metal clip that holds that cable into the vss click into place?

Does anyone know if the ls vss is the same or not. I know none of my d-series one will work and neither will a b16. Maybe an ls will work??
