Default Axle won’t fit in hub

I’m in the process of putting a B18A1 in a 1991 CRX HF and I’m having a problem getting the axles to fit in the hubs.

The hubs are supposedly from a Civic Si and I did compare them to the old HF hubs and they are quite a bit large in diameter. The axles I order are from a 1991 Acura Integra GS that I ordered from Rock Auto.

CV UNLIMITED Part # N4162
PASSENGER SIDE; W/O ABS

CV UNLIMITED Part # N4163
DRIVER SIDE; W/O ABS

The axles fit fine in the transmission and also in the half shaft but only go a little ways into the hub and just seem to get stuck and won’t go any further.

So did I get the wrong axles or are my hubs wrong or do I just need to give it a little more force to get them in? Usually when I replace axles they just slide in with no problems.

Here are some pics, not sure if it will be much use

looks a little rusty in there. straighten the axle out and try to tap it in with a mallet. Count the splines on the axle first

edit: those axles are for an abs car. you can tell by the rings on it.

My thoughts as well. Looks like they sent you the wrong ones.

Are you talking about the groove at the end of the axle, not the notch for the nut but the groove? If you are there isnt a ring at the end, it's just empty.

Usually when I replace D series axles they just slide right in with little or no effort. This is my first B series swap so I don't think it will be much different.

Oh ok, the gear looking thing, yeah when I got the axles I wasn't sure what the hell that was since I had never seen an axles that looked like that.

I think I might just return them and try to get another brand.

Well damn that sucks. Are the spline shafts a different size for ABS cars and that's why it wouldn't fit?

Thanks for the help, I'm not sure about the ABS either.

I knew I should have spent the extra money and got the Empi axles.

Yeah I removed the dust shield but the axle wouldn't even go in far enough to hit the back of the hub.

I was checking some other places like: NAPA, AutoZone, Advanced Auto, Parts Train etc and the pictures of the non abs axles have that ring.

Do your axles have the ring with the grooves near the joint?

The axle you have can/will fit in the hub you have... What ILcrxsi1 said about cleaning the hub out is what you need to do. Best suggestion is to get the axles without the ABS ring, as you have no need for it.
Clean out the hub, put some effort into it. You might have to use some force, but they will go together...
Good luck, working in the dirt sux

I have used teg axles w/ my b16 swap that had the abs ring and I had no problem. Have you counted the splines on the axle and the hub to make sure they are the same?

Will the ABS ring do anything bad and should I keep them? I would rather not have to shipp them back and find other axles as it was hard enough to find these.

Tomorrow I'm going to try and clean them out and maybe put a little Astro-Glide in the hub to see if I can get them to go in.

What about all the pics I checked online and they all had that ring, even the axles without ABS.

Pop that axle out of the tranny and try to install the axle into the hub so that you can actually see the splines if they 're lining up or not. It truly sounds like you got the wrong hubs. ABS axles don't matter!!!

I counted the splines on the axle and the hub and they are both 26, if it's not a Si hub then what hub is it from?

abs should not matter,(not sure about automatic though, maybe auto axles?) but as stated earlier take the axle out of the tranny and try to get it to go in, it just might be a weird angle you are trying to get it to go in at.

The abs rings wont matter. I used integra abs axles on mine after whacking the rings off with a chisel. Even though afterwards i realised they didnt need to come off the dust shields needed to come off not the ring. don't do this untill you are sure they are the right axle because you wont be able to return them.

Something in the back of my head tells me 1 of the years of HF hubs are diffrent... can't remember why..
