What makes the 88 CRX ligher than the later years?
The 88 CRX is reported to be about 150lbs lighter that the 90-91 when you compare and 88SI to a 90-91SI. Can anyone break down the components that make up this weight difference. I know the 88 doors are lighter, but by how much? Certainly not 150lbs. One of my theories is that the 88's were quoted with out A/C and stereo, where the 90-91 it was considered standard equipment.
I asked this same question but the moderator locked the thread.
First off:
The HF NEVER came with A/C standard. My '91 never had it. I bought it new and have owned it this entire time.
Anyone that says that the difference is all in the doors, is obviously smoking something. The doors are heavier but not by 75 pounds each. The body of the '90-'91 is obviously different and beefier but not sure where the changes are. I am in the process of researching. I have a friend with an '88 HF and hopefully I can find out a few things.

ChaserX,
You might be onto something with the body structure being different. I certianly agree that they 88 doors are lighter, but not 150lbs lighter. I know many of the things that make the HF lighter, but I'm comparing SI to SI. The 88 SI supposedly weights about 2017lbs and the 91 SI is 2167lbs.

the 88 crx didn't have some metal crash bars in the subframe, it had the seatbelts bolt onto the shell instead of doors, and all 88-89 came with the lighter drum rear brakes...the 88 hf is the lightest of all 2g crxs...even lighter than an 87 si
At this time I am willing to guess that there is a subframe or reinforcement on the body that surrounds doors with the passive restraints. This reinforcement could easily add 100 pounds total to the car. This is not inconsistent with the weights of the different CRX's with and without the passive restraints. The reason for this is that the frame around the door has to hold together sufficiently in a crash to prevent the door from popping open and depositing the occupant into the asphalt.
Clues to the function built into the body can be seen in the strange black thing high up in the door jam in the doors with the passive restraints.
To be honest I never liked the passive restraints. I use the seat belts as it was a normal car. I have on occastion slammed the door on the seatbelt and left nasty marks in the door. A horrible system, but when I bought the car in '91 you didn't have a choice. I'm glad later cars discarded the entire concept.
