GSR KABOOM! not so good
so driving to pick up a car for work today going throu an intersection at about 35-40 mph 5th gear.... engine stalls and i drift into a parking lot, i go to restart it, but the idle seems unsteady and if u give it gas rpms drop to almost 0 and come back up, no cels. i restarted it n got it to my hosue literally a block down the steet lucky me i guess. but im guessin its the timing belt skipped or i broke some teeth.. there is also a horrible tinging sound coming from the engine bay when u give it slight gas.
dk if how true this is but i heard if ur timing belt goes it most likely takes the top end with it.. idk someone give me an idea at what im lookin at for both situations
.this has never happened to me b4 and i have never had any serious problems..but anyways i have a 98 gsr with 124xxxmiles.
so my ? doies anyone know what this is or agree with what i think? i dont have time to mess with it or get it looked at till the weekend thanks.

Well the only real way to tell what is wrong is for someone to know what theyre doing look at it..youd have to take the timing covers off and see if the TDC mark lines up with the cam gear marks.Check ur spark plugs, take a look under the dist cap and do a compression test for starters.

Dont drive it! That tinging sound is probally a piece of valve bouncing around scratching up your cyl walls. Leakdown test and you will be able to tell. Basicly you forcing air threw the s park plug holes on each cyl. comes out intake, valve on intake side, exhaust, etc etc. dont forget to rotate the engine so that each cyl's valves are closed. You can rotate the engine by using a socket and breaker bar on the crack pully bolt.

if you get lucky all you will need is a Timing belt, head gasket, 1 valve (E or I Depending) and Fluids.
if you have one of those magnet on a stick tool you can reach down inside the spark plug hole and see if you get any valve fragments

Could be that your fuel pump went out (or is on its way) and its delivering just enough fuel to let the car idle and then dies off when more fuel is needed.....not real likely, but possible.
Do you have the stock ECU? Does your CEL illuminate when you start the car like it is supposed to? I find it hard to believe that you have this list of problems without a single CEL.

I pull hills at 25MPH in my 97 GSR. If I recall correctly, 35MPH is the recommended shift point to 5th gear as outlined in the owner's manual.

reasoning?
reasoning?
what should the compression test results come out to be..ive heard if they are all close im ok n what about letting the engine warm up? in my case it dosent sound good to let the engine run for more then 10secs so can a cold engine yeild accurate results?
This happened to me a couple months ago and for the longest I couldn't figure out what it was. After awhile I looked and saw it was the timing belt that had slipped and basically did take the top end w/it. I ended up going through 3heads before I decided to just scrap the motor and get a new one.
Come to find out the head that was originally on there had 3 bent valves and somehow warped...this was with 89,xxx miles on it.
