Default The ALMS 2007 Thread

I know there has been coverage on this in the past, but now that they have hit the track for the first time, and with the season beginning in two weeks (March 17th), I figured now is better than ever to get people talking about Acura in the 2007 ALMS.

They ran the other weekend and did very well during testing. Here are the stats from the test day on 1/23/2007

From reading some of the media posted on the ALMS website, the three Acura powered cars are thought to be top contenders this year. Could be interesting...

1) Lowe's Fernandez Racing (Fernandez/Diaz), Lola B05/40-Acura (LMP2), 1:50.156 (120.919 mph)
2) Intersport Racing (J. Field/C. Field/Berry), Lola B05/40-AER (LMP2), 1:52.231 (118.684 mph)
3) Autocon Motorsports (Lewis/McMurry/Willman), Lola EX257-AER (LMP1), 2:00.02 (110.998 mph)
4) Panoz Team PTG (Auberlen/Hand), Panoz Esperante GTLM (GT2), 2:04.423 (107.054 mph)
5) Flying Lizard Motorsports (van Overbeek), Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (GT2) 2:04.607 (106.896)
6) Flying Lizard Motorsports (Neiman, Law), Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (GT2), 2:05.960 (105.748)
7) Panoz Team PTG (Maxwell), Panoz Esperante GTLM (GT2), 2:07.014 (104.870 mph)
8) Tafel Racing (Liddell/Henzler), Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (GT2), 2:08.842 (103.382 mph)
9) Robertson Racing (D. Robertson/A. Robertson/Luyendyk Jr.), Panoz Esperante GTLM (GT2), 2:09.185 (103.108)

Session - 2

1) Penske Motorsports (Castroneves/Dumas/Bernhard), Porsche RS Spyder (LMP2), 1:47:228 (124.221 mph)
2) Dyson Racing (Dyson/Wallace), Porsche RS Spyder (LMP2), 1:49:894 (121.208 mph)
3) Lowe's Fernandez Racing (Fernandez/Diaz), Lola B05/40-Acura, 1:50:461 (120.586 mph)
4) Andretti Green Racing (Herta/Franchitti), Courage LC75-Acura (LMP2), 1:50:747 (120.274 mph)
5) Intersport Racing (J. Field/Berry/C. Field), Lola B05/40-AER (LMP2), 151.750 (119.195 mph)

I'll be attending the season opener at Sebring on the 17th and I cant wait to check out the new Acura's in person, however, I think the Porsche Spyders now have the experience and are the teams to beat in LMP2. I just dont think the Acuras are gonna have the durability AND pace combined to topple the Porsches...

It will be an interesting season for sure, especially since the ALMS isn't forcing the LMP2 teams to run 5% smaller air restrictors anymore.

What do you think about that finish of GT2? Was it good clean racing or foul play?

Yeah he owned the line after a clean pass and got run off the road. Awesome to watch, but sucks for him.

I love racing and try and watch whatever i can.

I think i watched a good 4 hours, well actually TRIED to watch. It was sooooo freaking boring i found my self watching the commercials durning the busch race and only fliping back every 30 minutes.

That was IMO the most expensive display of high-tech stuff going wrong.

I enjoy endurance racing, but you are also right on two counts. When the sun goes down its very hard to watch, because you can see so little of what is going on. The other thing is these guys will drive for 12 hours, but there will only be heated battles on track for limited periods. I mean you could watch the whole 12 hours and maybe only see a top team make a hand full of on track passes.

I guess you didn't see the end of this years race with the Risi team and Flying Lizard

i take it you have not been to Sebring????????

This was my 7th year in a row going to the 12 hours. I've been to almost all the big races in the US/Canada and even Europe and have yet to see a track that gives teams and cars the challenge of Sebring.

Acura's first race back in Prototype racing
All major factory teams run this event
First event of the year/all the new stuff for 2007
Great places to watch from.....unlike city races where veiwing is limited
Night and Day racing
Has SpeedChallenge/IMSA racing/911 Cup/Historical racing/panoz racing/etc.
has drivers from all kinds of backgrounds!!! f1/indy/cart/etc.
good weather (other then this year Friday showers)
80.00 for 4 day ticket
Great parties during St. Patricks Day Sat.

for those who have gone and not just watch on the T.V.!

I'm popping my ALMS cherry in three weeks. I wonder how much faster they'll be than the Grand Am prototypes.

what class in ALMS? I would say they are slower then most of P1 and P2 cars. But i would take a bet that a DP could have finished in the top 5 at sebring this year.
